Can you list about what you eat...and how much

after you recover from the VSG surgery and are allowed normal foods?

Also, have a BMI of 35 and wonder what to tell people when they ask how I am losing weight since my husband and I have decided not to share with others  that I am having surgery.  I am very private and that is just not an option for me to share.

Thanks,  Mel_ga

I am 10 months out and I eat normal foods.  I don't eat much but they are regular food that everyone eats.
I tell people I am on a  diet of low fat, low carb and high protein.  When I tell them I have given up bread, pasta, carbonated drinks and sweets they usually just say no way could I do that.  I don't get too many questions after that and I too didn't tell anyone of my surgery.  Not even family.

I didn't want any negitive comments so I kept it to myself.

Good luck to you and I'll look for you on the other side of the fence one day.

You could just tell folks you're exercising and counting calories...both will be probably be true. That should answer their questions.

In regards to food, I can eat just about everything and I'm almost a year out. There's a few items that seem to bother my reflux.....tomatoes, onions....but not a big deal.
I do a protein shake for breakfast (my choice 'cause lots of folks eat solids); greek yogurt, cottage cheese or string cheese as an AM snack; lunch is usually 2 turkey and lf cheese roll ups; finish the AM snack in the afternoon and seafood stir fry for dinner (scallops or shrimp and veggies). I try not to eat after dinner because the evenings have always been my danger area. But a sugar free Popsicle is calling my name about now.

Good luck.

I have discovered that pasta does not sit well in my sleeve and potatoes tend to make me too full as well so i avoid those things. I eat mostly chicken, fish, cottage cheese, yogurt and salad or veggies. I also love turkey pepperoni(great for when you are on the move @ 50 calories/stick).  I eat a selection from what i am serving the family and other than small portion size, no one would notice me eing differently.  I avoid most carbs because bread, crackers etc. just seem to be trigger foods making me want more and more. You will discover your own items that may not sit well in your sleeve or may cause dumping and adjust your plate accordingly. You can tell people whatever you are comfortable with and hopefully they will simply respect the fact that you are disappearing before their eyes.

I tell anyone who will listen about my life-saving WLS.  As a result, a neighbor-fishing-buddy is scheduled to have his surgery later this Spring - he credits me w/helping him make the decision.
Pay it forward!
I'm 65, and I left any shame about obesity and WLS in the OR w/most of my stomach.
My honesty about it all has marshalled a large support system of friends, neighbors and family all of whom share in my success - and several of them are now on their own weight-reduction and exercise programs of one type or another.

At 4.5 mos. post-op, I'm down 110 lbs. and I eat a "regular" diet w/few exceptions.  I have a protein shake for breakfast every single day - boring? yes, that's exactly what I want it to be - no food decisions in the a.m.  I don't eat much in the way of processed carbs like pasta, crackers, bread, etc., but I do eat veggies and fruit - almost anything is okay, just chew, chew, chew, and eat slowly.  I will certainly have a "bite" of my grand daughter's birthday cake on Sat.

I eat 4 mini-meals daily @ 4 hour intervals and I do not snack or graze between meals. I exercise enough to burn 500+ calories every single day - no days off, ever.  I don't think WHAT you eat is as important as HOW MUCH you eat.  I measure my input and I RECORD EVERY BITE  so I have an accurate accounting at the end of the day.  I know calories, carbs, fats, sugars, and most importantly, protein for every day since long before my surgery.  I use Myfitnesspal.com as my on-line journal.  It's free - try it.
Hard work? Yep Painful at times? Yep (so take a pill)  Frustrating? A wee bit.  Worth it?  Absolutely!  I have a much healthier and happier life ahead of me.

This is what I'm eating today, 18 months post-op,

B - Latte
L - 4 oz. Skirt Steak, 2 oz. Steamed Spinach
S - 4 oz. Fresh Mozzarella Cheese
D - 4 oz. Grilled Salmon, 3 oz. Grilled Vegetables
S - 1 oz. Cashews

I can eat anything I like but continue to limit carbs to less than 40 grams per day and no longer eat rice, pasta, potato or a lot of bread.

When people start asking about your weight loss just tell them "you're eating less and exercising".

Good luck,
George

On a typical day I will eat every 3 hours. Usually I eat one of my recipes like chicken salad, soup or tuna salad all day. So I might eat 3 cups of chicken or tuna salad over a day (1/2 to 3/4 cup per meal), plus a few ounces of cheese or a few ounces of nuts or a few sticks of my beef jerky (the last thing usually happens at night when I like to munch on stuff). I always start the day with coffee with almond milk. My calories are usually below 1000 unless I have a bit too much cheese or nuts.
