Never thought this would happen?
So... I've been big my whole life. My family, there all big too. We all have pet names for each other, mine kikiballie (lol, I know). We usually call each other gordi's (which means fatties in spanish). On Saturday I called my older sister "my gordis" and gave her a hug. I've done this about a million times. We say it casually since I could remember. My older sister froze and ran to her room. My little sister called me a b*tch and my mom chewed me out.
What the hell?
I went to her room and asked her what did I do wrong? She said now that I'm going to be smaller, normal, whatever you want to call it, I can't call her that. WHAT???? I'm 270 pounds right now, no where near my goal and I can't call her a name I've used since I can remember. (She's going to get Sleeved in the late summer and so is my younger sister.) I agreed, I wouldn't call her anything like that again but I told her "Look, we've been calling each other that name since... forever so if I slip, I will apologize but you have to give me some slack." She agreed.
Anyone else come into this type of situation? I think its so silly and ridiculous but then I can see where my sisters are coming from, they want there Sleeves too and maybe when I say stuff like that they think I'm rubbing it in. I've never been one to rub ANYTHING in.

Tensions seem to be running high. Your sisters are seeing your weight loss and may feel threatened by it. You confronted the situation and hopefully your sister's reaction will be different the next time you call her "gordi".
The good thing is that once they're sleeved you'll have more in common.
Many of us experience similar reactions from friends and family. People get strange when you lose weight.
Best of luck,
George

My boyfriend did not become overweight until after we moved in together. Though he is self conscious about his weight we have always teased each other and called each other things like fatty. Now that I have been sleeved and am losing weight he gets upset when I do this so I have had to stop. I feel for ya but it will all be worth the little changes in the end.
((((((((((hugs)))))))))) family stuff can be so crazy!!!!! even if you're still 270, you've taken the step and they can probably see a change in you (less gorda!). we're all so touchy about how weight affects us. sorry this happened to you, sux. hang in there. you will all have to come up with new names after they are sleeved (flaca?). take good care of YOU!!!
Ohhh, that must be so hard!
I am hispanic as well and realize that "gordis" is truly a pet name and not offensive. My twins are pretty thin babies and yet we call them gordo and gorda all the time. I stop and remind myself to not do this as they might not like it as they get older.
Family dynamics are tough! My older sister had RNY about 8 years ago and kept pushing my husband and I to do it because she would be pill free, etc, etc. Well, now she has gained most of it back and is under more medications than she was before because of her malabsorption. I love her, but with Family sometimes you just can't win...just try to survive!
Good luck!
