Question for all of you long time sleevers...

I met with my surgeon today for the first time and it left me with some questions..

1. He said tylenol and advil were bad to take because of ulcers...but what do you do when you get a headache? (as I have chronic headaches)

2.  I don't know how to phrase this one too much, I know the first year post op is pretty strict on the diet, but can you ever eat anything again like a hamburger or cake? (i.e. if i decide to get married...can I have wedding cake?)

 Thank you in advance!

Of course you can eat hamburger or cake. Just dont eat the entire cake. I wrap my hamburger in lettuce...just because Im keeping my carbs down.
Heck, I had my VSG in October and had a small sliver of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving.
Thats the beauty of this surgery......a very small treat on a rare occasion and the weight still comes off. Im not going to deprive myself for a lifetime. But, Im not going to eat the whole pie like I once did. lol

I havent heard of avoiding tylenol or advil. But, I must defer to your Dr. on that one. Personally, I still take those meds occasionally.

Oh thank you!  You put me at ease! XD and also, did you do the 1200 calorie diet prior to surgery? The one kaiser has me on is only 3 meals a day and Im hungry! lol ahh all in the sake of losing 30lbs to qualify for surgery! XD

im not a year out but I have had hamburger and cake lol.. its all about how much of it you eat and how frequently.. your not really cutting everything out of your diet.. I honestly think the first 6 week were the roughest..

One of the advantages of Sleeve is that you can continue to take NSAID drugs. There is a chance of developing an Ulcer due to that. But that not due to the sleeve that's just something that can happen because of those drugs. With the bypass because you have a pouch and the instruments that they use to scope the stomach will scope the pouch and not the stomach that remains. Ulcers that may develop in the stomach are blind to those techniques.

There is a diet Post op. Doctors programs very. Some have stages where you do liquids, then purees, mushie foods and then to solids. Early on your stomach is still tender and healing. And may object to certain foods.

Usually after several months you can eat just about anything (although mileage may very per individual).

Every program that I have seen requires protein first. Guess what Hamburger is protein. Although you will find you can only eat a couple of ounces. But you can have cake and other things. But if you eat too much of it you can gain weight. Remember you only have a limited amount of room so you still need to make smart choices regarding the fuel you put into your body.

The beauty of the sleeve is that you still have a completely functioning stomach.  You can still eat any foods you want.

That being said....I've seen people that have problems with dense proteins, hard to digest veggies, etc.  A lot of people also report that their tastes and preferences change. So don't be surprised if you no longer want a hamburger or cake after surgery.  I think you will also be surprised by how little an amt of food it will take for you to be satisfied.

But no....after you complete your doctors post-op plan there really should be no dietary restrictions based simply on your sleeve...but rather what your own taste buds and stomach prefer.

My surgeon allows tylenol based products but not NSAIDS=ib profin, advil, midol, etc. He says these drugs can cause ulcerations so we have to refrain from taking those when at all possible. I am over a year out and can pretty much eat what I want with the exception of spicy foods and highly acidic foods...but that can be cir****tancial to the person. I know some people on here have no issues at all. I had a sensitive tummy prior to surgery.

I am just over a year postop.  I couldn't eat burger until about 6 mths postop, it just upset my stomach, but everyone is different on what foods they can tolerate.  I just ate my first burger w/bun a few days ago..first one in a year..and it was awesome!  I don't eat breads unless toasted (again MY stomach just can't handle it)..so I through a hamburger bun in the toaster..was wonderful!

As for cake, yes..you can still have some.  I have eaten some cake, but it only took a few bites and I was satisfied.

As for tylenol and such, I was never told to avoid it (again, go w/doc's orders though).  I used to have a fair amount of headaches, but this past year I've only had to take tylenol once.  Maybe Its because I'm so less stressed and just much happier now.

I wish you the best of luck!

I am an OLD timer... In fact, haven't been on this board in a VERY long time!  I'm checking in mainly because I'm having to keep myself in check.........

I'm trying to remember what I ate... I think after the first 6 months, I was comfortable with anything.  I'm finding I can eat a little more than I think I should and after a LONG winter in Michigan, I need to get moving more. (I enjoy walking outside with dogs and friends!)

I do take advil - probably too much.  I don't believe I was told to stay away from it, but need to be cautious....

I've also been enjoing a little too much wine and that's empty cals, so I'm getting back to the board to help me stay focused.
