I posted my experience earlier:  http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/VSG/4395371/My-VSG-experie nce-long/

As to what I brought to the hospital - I won't bother listing.  All I used was my chapstick/berts bees stuff!  Oh - and the pads that I brought - they were better than the hospitals!  (I started Monday and had surg. Wednesday - so yeah -fun the whole time!

Getting back to normal - I have "normal moments" but they pass quickly!  I'm willing to take as much time to heal as my body needs!

Good luck!

1. My surgery was scheduled for 9:30, I went in closer to Noon. Got to the hospital, registered, got my vitals taken and then sat in the waiting room till they were ready to take me to pre op. Once in pre op, I got changed, more vitals, had my IV started and met with an anestesiologist, nurse anesthetist, Surgeon, and a few others. Right before they wheeled me to the OR, they injected something (cant think of the name at this second) into my IV to relax me.

2. I took a bunch of things with me, but all I really used was my cell phone, phone charger, camera, chapstick and underwear. Like someone else mentioned a lot of women get their periods after surgery. I was one of the lucky ones. The hospital provided booties for me to wear to walk the halls. And I could not have survived without my chapstick!

3. I am about 2 1/2 weeks post op. I didnt start driving until about 10 days post op. It depends on the day if I feel "normal" or not. I still need a nap almost everyday, and I still have some soreness in my lower abdomen. I am thinking that in about 2 more weeks, I should feel much better.

Good luck!!

I had surgery on Wednesday. Arrived at the hospital at 6:00 am. Surgery was scheduled for 7:30. I was called back approximately 10 minutes after arriving. Once in the pre-op staging area I had to take everything off and get into the stylish hospital gown and crawl onto the bed. The nurse came back and took my vitals and started the IV. She tried to draw blood from the IV but did not get enough so she had to poke me a few more times in different places on the other arm to get the required amount. The anesthesioligist came in (boy was he strange) and basically told me that they would wheel me into the operating room, I would slide over to the operating table and then he would insert something in my IV to make me go to sleep and I would wake up and it would all be over. Once the nurses had me completely prepped my hubby and my dad were allowed back to see me until it was time for me to go. At 7:25 the nurse anestitist came in with the OR nurse and she gave me something to relax me in my IV. I said goodbye to my family and they wheeled me out. Whatever they gave me hit me hard. I remember rolling into the OR and seeing the operating table and I don't remember anything after that until I came to in recovery. Pretty much that whole first day is a blur with little tidbits that I remember here and there. I wasn't in a lot of pain. I just had a horrible dry mouth. I could not have water or ice chips until my swallow test the next day so the hospital provided mouth swabs to keep my mouth moist. I got up and walked that night. The morphine made me really itchy so I had to have benadryl through my IV. This kept me sleeping soundly through the night. I got to go home in the afternoon of the next day. I am not back to feeling normal. I am really struggling to get any protein and all my fluids. I do feel a little better each day. Definitely take chap stick with you, a cell phone to call loved ones, comfy clothes. I took a toiletry bag with toothpaste/toothbrush, shampoo/conditioner, deoderant and lotion. I didn't get to take a shower until the day after I was discharged but I was thankful for the deoderant and the toothbrush! Good luck to you!
