Confused

Hi everyone!  I had my appt. with the surgeon yesterday.  I went in planning to have VSG and she threw me a curveball, as she thought I was planning on RNY.  We talked pros and cons of each and now I'm so confused.  I have to make a decision by the end of the week, so my surgery can be scheduled and insurance approval sought.  The other piece that freaked me out (in a good way, mostly) was that I thought the surgery would be in late August, and she said it would probably be in July.  There are pros/cons to an earlier date - pros are that I can take the next, and biggest step on my journey sooner,  my health improves more and sooner, I have coverage at work, etc.  The cons are, depending on what date in July, are: will I be on the pre-op diet when we have 20 people at our house for our annual 4th of July party? will I miss one of my oldest's softball tournaments? will I be healed enough to have a 13th birthday party for my oldest in mid-August?    These reasons sound a bit trite compared with my health, I know.  I am just processing from what I  had already decided and was settled with, to a whole new set of decisions, etc. to process through and finalize.  Does any of this stuff make sense?  Thanks!

I'm more for restrictive type of surgery - I never even considered RNY because I didnt think it was a good thing to disrupt the natural part of digestion.  You are rerouting your food intake and with that there are so many malnutrition issues and complications.  I'm due for my sleeve surg next week, but feel that this is the best decision I've made based on research and responses on OH.

As for vacations and holidays, I get what you are saying because I too am giving up alot of my summer to do this, but this is all for the best!  Id rather give up my time now and begin living a better healthier life later.

Good luck with your decision!

I chose VSG over RNY because: 1 - hate the idea of being "rerouted", 2 - don't like the malabsorbtion issue that can lead to malnutrition, 3 - dumping - don't like that at all!, 4 - ghost stomach - hate the idea of part of the stomach being "out there" but can't be scoped, 5 - NSAIDs - can have them on VSG, not on RNY.

There are also studies about the way you process carbs in the future - it seems RNY doesn't do as well and can cause weight re-gain - somehting to do with the pylorus valve no longer being there...  (Not a medical genious as you can see!)

Finally - VSG has weightloss ALMOST as good as RNY.  Based upon the benefits - I chose VSG!

Good luck making your decision!

I chose the Sleeve after my research indicated that the RNY has many more complications and complications requiring additional surgery.  I chose to have a more normal relationship with food.  Having your pyloric valve contributes to a easier lifestyle.    By that I mean I do not malabsorb my vitamins and shouldn't end up with serious deficiency diseases as a result.  Food doesn't get stuck and things are easier.  Do your research.  Check out the RNY board.

As for the 4h of July picnic.  You won't hurt yourself if you eat normally for one day.

With a Sleeve I would have been able to host a 13th birthday party a month after surgery.  It would be a good idea to solicit help in case you need it, but you should be OK.

Good Luck!

I had my surgery a week before Thanksgiving, a month before Christmas/New Years.  I had bridal and baby showers to attend.  Bottom line, there's always something going on.  You just go have it done and deal with whatever inconveniences there are.

Like others, I didn't want malabsorption, didn't want prohibitions on what kinds of medications I could take, didn't want to lose my working pyloric valve, didn't want restrictions on what I could eat.  So VSG for me.

Best of luck to you!

RNY VS Sleeve is an extremely personal choice for each person as it is made with your particular health needs and your opinion about how you want your body to react.  I would post the question in both the forums so I could hear both sides present their reasons then you can decide what makes most sense to you .  My reasons for getting a sleeve instead of RNY or DS is :

1. I did not want a "pouch" for a stomach.

2. I did not want an area my GI could not scope or otherwise see into. I want my Drs to have total accessability to my organs and intestines for regular check ups.

3. I did not want to have dumping syndrom

4. I did not want to have my intestines rerouted which leads to the possibility of more complications and leaks.

5. I have an autoimmune disease and malabsorbtion is already an issue so additional malabsorbtion could be a health hazard.

6.  I did not want to have the hunger factor and the part of the stomach containing the hunger hormone is removed .

7.  I did not want to worry about stomach stretching out again.  With VSG there is less chance of that.

8.  I wanted to eat as normally as possible which means that occassionaly at  wedding I want to have a bite of cake or a sip of champagne, I don't want to worry that a crumb of bread or a piece of rice is going to get stuck in a pouch causing me to throw up.

Those are my reasons but they may or may not matter to you.  Like I said its very personal why we each have our particular surgeries .

Thank you all for your support and advice.  I have still been leaning toward the VSG even after my discussion with Dr. yesterday.  I think that is what I will end up with, but not at 100% yet.

I know the life stuff is on-going, so I won't turn down earlier surgery if that is what ends up happening.  I'm not so concerned about the fact that I'd not be able to eat regular food on the 4th, if surgery is w/in 2 weeks.  I'm not ready to tell certain people about having surgery yet, and don't want the questions of why I'm having something different.  However, having said that, if it comes down to it, I will deal with it.  I'm probably making more of it than needed - I'm an over-analyser :).

Momsy55-

I had a meeting with her yesterday and have the same feelings.  I'm sending you a friend request so we can do some private messaging.
