I'm in a RUT!!!

I know that I've been MIA, but a lot of it is due to what you're about to read in this post.

I had surgery June 6, 2011. I had to complete a 2 week pre-op diet prior to my actual surgery date. By surgery date, I'd lost 10 pounds. By my 10 day post op appointment, I was 37 lbs down from my highest weight and 27 down from my surgery date's weight. Now, I've only lost about 6 more pounds.

Now, I'm not oblivious to the fact that "I'm not supposed to compare my results/doctor's orders to others on this site"; however, I'm somewhat confused and felt as if I could TURN here for help.

Okay here goes: During my 10th day post-op appointment, my doctor moved me to FULL LIQUIDS, and I've been on them EVER since. I don't go back to the doctor until JULY 14, 2011, and then...maybe then he'll move me on. This is my problem. When my surgeon gave me the list of foods I am to eat, etc...he never said anything about HOW many calories to take in a day, neither did I receive any information about getting protein in.  So, I'm wondering if I should be CONCERNED??? This Wednesday, I will be 1 month out  and I have NO specifics when it comes to PROTEIN INTAKE....as a matter of fact, it doesn't mention protein AT ALL!!!

Is there anyone else out there who has had a similar experience or is there someone who is more experienced in this area feel like enlightening me??

PLEASE PROVIDE SOME FEEDBACK!!!

I'm really sorry you're going through this!

Every surgeon has their own plan, but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like you have ANY plan.

Can you call the surgeon's office and clarify? A month seems a long time to be on full liquids, especially if you haven't been given nutritional info. (My surgeon has us on full liquids for 1 week, then mushies for 1 month, then slowly adding other foods). I've seen others on clear 1 week, full 1 week, pureed 1 week, mushie 1 week, then adding more foods. Again, every dr is different.

I think that overall 60-80 grams of protein per day are recommended, along with 48-64 ounces of liquid (to ensure hydration).

My surgeon doesn't give any calorie guidelines, but does give approved foods and portion sizes (along with protein/fluid recommendations).

Let me know if you want more details...

i shoot for 100 grams protein 40 grams of carbs and 600-800 calories. Hang in there and the weight will come off.

That's a long time on liquids - wow. Probably the reason you didn't get such guidelines is because your surgeon is more concerned with your stomach healing than calories or how much protein, especially since you were doing so well weight loss wise.  Biggest concern is hydration - follow the protein/carb guidelines of others here on OH if you would like but you are not having trouble losing weight and probably the food list your surgeon gave you included plenty of protein. My priority early on was to get well from surgery, adjust to all the diet and lifestyle changes (I had many) and get enough fluids.

Here is the plan my doctor gave me for for weight loss post-op.
I followed these instructions and they got me to my weight loss goal.

1. 600-800 calories per day when losing weight. 1,200 calories when maintaining
2. 70-100 grams of protein
3. Limit carbs to less than 40 grams per day
4. Minimum 64 oz. liquids
5. Regular exercise/physical activity (I bike ride and garden)
6. Track what you eat (I use myfitnesspal.com)

This is essentially the program many of us on OH were given post-op.

The key to my weight loss was limiting carbs, eating dense protein and being active.

Good luck,
George

 Hello, my friend!

I am so glad to see you back..I was starting to worry about you.

I agree that a month of full liquids is a little harsh.  I was on full liquids from surgery for two weeks and then purees for another 2 weeks.  Now I am starting two weeks of soft foods, then on to regular foods.

Like you, my surgeon has given me nutritional guidelines but only with the type of foods that I should be eating and samples of amounts.

No quidelines for protein or calorie intake.  He also doesn't recommend protein supplements or shakes after the full liquids phase.

So, I totally hear you.  I am guiding myself by what he says and what I find here in the forum.

I hope that you feel better soon!
