Surgery 7/26 and I keep slipping
hi
so i have surgery 7/26 and i am doing a liquid diet with one meall a day, some days are going ok, others are totally bad. today after my shakes all day long, i ended up ordering food out.
i do so poorly with the deprivation of dieting that it always leads to me bingeing! i am so scared for surgery because i know that the removal of 85% of my stomach will not remove the 85% of my brain that is broken.
will i be able to do this? i really want to change, but i have such a hard time staying on a diet!
any insight appreciated!!

I had the same issues when I was on my preop diet! Do you know what I discovered??? If I stuck to the shakes for a day or so, and didn't slip up, my cravings for carbs were almost completely gone!!! If I slipped up and it was something loaded with carbs, I craved carbs ALL WEEK LONG!!!
Stick with it and get through at least 3-4 days and see how you feel! And I would make your one meal a day very low carb and high protien! Anytime you expose yourself to carbs it restarts the cycle!!!
Hang in there!!! You can do it!!!

You WILL be able to do it. You are slipping now because you know that you CAN. I can guess in the back of your head that you feel that this is the "last time" you will have this food or that food. I can tell you that after surgery you CAN'T slip. You have to be on a liquid diet and it may risk your recovery if you don't follow the eating plan.
After you clear your body of all the cravings, you will feel much better. Be sure to have foods before your surgery for each stage. Be sure to get Unjury chicken broth or unflavored broth (beneprotein is a good brand). The more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel. Sugar Free ice pops were my saving grace after surgery!!! Now..6 months later, GUM is my saving grace.
It's not easy, especially in the beginning but it is so worth it. Be sure to find a support group, to deal with issues of complusive overeating. that helped me tremendously.
Good Luck

I love your honesty. When I was on my 2 week pre op I thought to myself " If I cant diet and loose weight then how can you expect me to not chew for 2 weeks" I read about all these people that did so good and the guilt got to me. But really it doesn't matter now. I am sleeved for 8 weeks and lost 48 lbs as of today.... me the girl who couldn't get through the first 2 weeks. This is the best thing I ever did for myself. Do your best, stay on track and when all is said and done you will do fine.
Good luck.
Good luck.
You will find that your new stomach will send strong messages to your brain that you are full on lesser amounts. That is why it is important to get the protein in particularly post op. As other posters have said sticking with a preop regiment greatly helps cut carb cravings which can be deadly. You can do it if you just stick with it. It is genuinely worth the wait.
thanks everyone!
it is carbs that are my downfall. i drink protein shakes and aim to eat protein and veggies for dinner. so far so good but tonight it turned into lasagna and bread and omg....
rebooting...tomorrow. i really want to do well, i just let my own devious thoughts get the best of me
all of your collective success on this board inspires me :)
after all, i need to be healthy and thinner to keep up in the hospital now or i may not make it through medical school. :(
looking forward. three weeks from today.

I'm having surfer 7/25 and only have a one week pre op diet. I know this probably doesn't help, as every surgeon is very specific at what they want. I would say slipping up now then in the last week or 2 is probably better. Ive been trying only low carb meals, and have too been slipping up. I'm thinking of starting my pre op diet early and try to get the carbs out of my system by trying to only do shakes for a couple of days. Good luck, you are not alone.
