Sleeve vs. Plication? Please help.

I posted this same question on the main board.

I'm new to this site and could really use some feedback about the newest choice, Plication.

I'm scheduled, with my husband, on Aug 1st with Dr. Ortiz at the Obesity Control Center in Tijuana.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I've seen a handful of posts on plication in the year plus that I've been on this forum. I did a search and here are the results. Check out some of these threads and maybe you will get the info you want Good luck.

I find that Google usually knows a lot about a lot of different things. Have you tried it? I did and found this. Personally, I'm thrilled my stomach and the ghrelin is gone.

Basically, the procedure can best be understood as a version of the more popular gastric sleeve or gastrectomy surgery where a sleeve is created by suturing rather than removing stomach tissue.

There's a local doc here in my little town that is a huge proponent of the band. He also does all kinds of other stuff like the plication. My rule of thumb is, if he does it, I don't want it. It's good you're asking and doing your homework. Keep researching.

There's a couple of complication topics on here from a couple of months ago about perforation and sutures coming undone and one plication patient on verticalsleevetalk and plicationtalk.com that had a revision from plication to the VSG due to lack of weight loss. There is another member on verticalsleevetalk that is having the same issue with extremely slow weight loss and constant hunger, and she's saving up to revise to VSG as well.

I'll see if I can dig up those links so you can read those stories yourself.

Here's the one I can find on here, there are more on verticalsleevetalk.com and plicationtalk.com

Plication was not even considered when I was looking to revise from the band, not only because the couple of people that had it 2 years ago posted on youtube about their struggles, but for me, it seems no less reversible than the band considering the scar tissue that forms, and then to read the complications and then to read from 2 different surgeons that they were not offering it anymore after pushing it for over a year because of slow weight loss and complications, it just didn't seem like the choice I needed to make considering I already had one surgery fail miserably and caused major damage to my stomach tissue.

You may want to question the Dr. about circulation of the vessels as they are folded in.  I did read about that being a complication.  Good Luck!

Glad you made it to this site Donna! Everyone is extremely helpful! I hope you are finding information you were looking for! Dr. Ortiz is awesome, like I mentioned on the OCC forum, but this forum is 1000 times better than the OCC one!

Thanks soooooo much to all of you. I believe I will go with the proven method of Gastric Sleeve along with my husband.

I think it's more known to surgeons in our area of the world so IF there are any complications it can be dealt with quickly at an ER.

I'm looking forward to this journey with my husband....it means he'll be around a LOT longer now.

Now on to the next topic...liquid diet before surgery? 2 weeks?
How did everybody do it?

I have cut back this past week to salads with meat, no bread, pasta, potatoes etc.
No caffeine and no wine...( that's the hardest as I am a big wine connoisseur and we were at a convention in Palm Beach all week ).

But the instructions say that by going on the liquid diet before the surgery and eliminating all the other sutff  it reduces the risk of complications by reducing the size of the liver and making it heathier so they can pu**** out of the way without injuring it. I really like my liver.

Thanks again for the feedback.

ya someone posted about the complications he had a few pages back.  I never heard of this before so I googled it.  I wouldnt have it done.  You can get leaks from the sutures and parts of your stomach can die if its not folded right.

Its a very very new procedure from what Ive read.  I would prefer to have all that  Ghrelin gone.  I dunno I'd really read everything I could get my hands on.  You are supposedly able to reverse it, but if you get really bad scar tissue that makes it hard to do.  As is the case with the person I mentioned above.

Hi there. Just to chime in I am 21 days out of surgery with the Plication and I have been pleased with the results. I have a friend who has the VSG and we have about the same restriction. The reason I did not do VSG was due to the staple line and the possibility of a leak. I also wanted to be hungry so that food would still be something I could enjoy. I can also eat anything I want in a week. All I have been doing is tracking my calories. I get in about 600 -1200 a day and I am exercising 5 times a week. This is a restriction only surgery so you still have to watch what you eat carefully but for me it is about changing my eating habits for life. I have made a lot of friends who are over a year out of Plication and most I have talked to have lost 60-70% of their ecess body weight which is excellent!

Good Luck to you!
