Voluntary preop diet?

If your surgeon's office said you have a low enough BMI that you don't really have to worry about shrinking your liver, would you still do the liquid diet on your own? For how long? ( I only have 8 days).

I would do it just to shrink the liver, I know it is not required for Mexico surgeons but I know I will be doing a 1 week pre-op liquid diet.

I had my surgery in Mexico and my doctor had me do a three-week liquid diet.  He bases it on your BMI for how long you have to do it (or if you have to do it at all.)

I have read a few Mexico surgeries and they were told the night before to go out and have their last meal lol.  I won't be going to that doctor I know there are good ratings on him but there are also good ratings on some of the lower prices doctors.

I'd do it for a few days at least to start getting use to the liquid protein.  You can experiment with different flavors and such prior to surgery.

Good luck!

I would go ahead and try it for a few days to get used to what you might have to go through post op.

I am so glad I did the pre-surgical diet and did so for 13 days.  (Funny story--I was supposed to only have to do a week before surgery so of course the week before that I was eating everything else.  I got the call to start my pre-surgical diet when I was in the drive through of a local donut shop.  I was trying to pay for my donuts and listen to the dietitian at the same time)  That aside, beginning early lets you go into surgery with a clean head and some early weight loss to encourage you.  Before you go in for your surgery you are already motivated and see some tangible weight loss.  It also makes it less extreme to go from the pre-surgical diet to liquids following surgery--the psychological break is very helpful.

Good luck however you decide to proceed!

My BMI was 37 and my doctor told me I did not have to do it, but it would be helpful.  I did two weeks worth of liquid diet.  It was hard, but it helped get me into the right mind set for this journey.  I am glad I did it.  I lost 13 lbs. in those two weeks.
