What are the most common complications with the sleeve?   A woman I go to church with VSG and a hitial (sp?) hernia repair done at the same time.  She had to stay in the hospital because she couldn't get any liquids down. They finally figured out that her stomach had "twisted".   I talked to her daughter and she wasn't for sure if the complications were from the hernia repair or the sleeve itself.   Her Mom came home with a pic line and a stint in her stomach.   I know everyone has heard horror stories about WLS.   I'm still new in my research of the sleeve and haven't really gotten to the possible complication part.

Thanks!
Amy

The most common you will read about here is hernias, dehydration and leaks. All manageable if you catch them early and follow dr orders

I had a hernia repair when I went in for my VSG and other than the surgery itself taking longer there was no difference for me. I came out of surgery feeling well. Did a lot of walking in the hospital and was drinking lots of fluids to stay hydrated. I attribute my very uneventful surgery to my awesome doctor.
My suggestion would be to find the absolute best doctor you can find/afford. My surgery was $12,500 out of pocket and worth every penny!
Much luck to you.

Hi Amy,

I also had a hiatal hernia repaired during my sleeve surgery.  Apparently a lot of people have those and not a big deal.  Since my surgery, I have had a lot of nausea (common problem), throw up if I eat too fast (common problem), and recently have had problems with my blood pressure being too low (I think this is relatively common).  The fact that I am almost 9 months out and still wrestle with nausea at times and throwing up is relatively uncommon from what I have seen.

I would do the surgery all over again even if these problems never go away...

Hi Amy - Dr. Colquitt did my lapband in 2004 and I lost weight the first couple of years then it quit working and no matter how Dr. Colquitt tried to adjust it, it was too tight.  I asked him about doing gastric bypass and he said he would, but asked me to consider the sleeve.  All I can say is WOW - it has been great.  I'm a slow loser, but I'm so happy with my sleeve.  I have not had any complicatons.  He removed my band, my gallbladder and gave me the sleeve all in one operation.  I've lost 45 lbs in 3.5 months - which is very good for me.  My surgery was as easy and as painless as when he did the lapband.  I guess some people do have problems, but Dr. Colquitt is a great surgeon and if you follow the rules you will probably do wonderful.  Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cindy,
That sounds a lot like what's going on with my band.  It seems like if I get past 2cc's I have problems.  I'm not hung up on the number of cc's, but at 2cc I don't have any restriction.
Did you stay in the hospital one night?
Great job on the weight loss!

Hi Amy - Yes, I stayed in the hospital one night - I felt good enough to go home, but with the sleeve he keeps you one night.  Thank you - I'm very excited with my weight loss - I love the sleeve so much better than the band.  Good luck.

I had just a regular old sleeve... I'm on the younger side (30) and pretty darn healthy... and I had a "twist", well, they called it a "kink" too.  It's pretty rare... I had an amazing surgeon with a stellar reputation.

HOWEVER... it was a quick fix all things considered... they found it and had me back in surgery within 24 hours of the first surgery... i ended up in the hospital longer only because they wanted me on teh IV as I had a hard time getting things down at first... I went home just fine, and now at three weeks out am back to atleast 80% and have been eating real food for a week :-)

No regrets....

I have heard about the sleeve twisting.  Did your surgeon tell you what might cause that?

Thanks,

Santos

Basically with me after they checked it and scoped it they tacked it into place... they must have curved it to much and allowed it to kink... sigh.
