Rapid heartbeat after protein shake

Does anyone else have this problem? It happened after drinking a Boost or Ensure Plus so I stopped drinking them. I am now back on the feeding tube and using Carnation Instant Breakfast VHC. If I dilute with equal amounts of water it doesn't seem to be an issue. I don't get this with anything else I eat or drink.

I know it seems strange to be asking this question over 2 years out but I thought it would eventually go away on its on.

Hi Haley, so nice to see you on here.  I don't typically drink shakes but I understand exactly what you're talking about.  When I overeat my pulse increases and I just don't feel "right."  It's kind of hard to explain but it sometimes feels as if my heart might beat out of my chest!  This has only happened since surgery.  It's like the over abundance of food is "taxing" on my new tiny tummy.   Hope you get some answers.  Take care!  ~Jennifer

I had the same problem a few times, it was very unsettling.  I thought it was my bp, but a friend who is 7 years post op seemed to think maybe it was a problem with lactose intolerance.  I didn't really agree it had never been a problem in the past.  I did make the next shake with Ultra Soy Milk and have had no problems since.    Good luck!

I know it's not lactose intolerance as the fornula is lactose & glucose free. Plus I have no problem with any other dairy products. I'm getting ready to switch formulas so I'll check the sugar ****ent and if it's lower and doesn't give me the shakes I'll know that's the problem.

Is there sugar in the Boost and Ensure? It just might be too much sugar getting in too fast.
I hope you are healing well!

There are 15 grams of sugar in each can of the formula I'm using with the feeding tube. Is that a lot?

I am not a doctor so I don't know for sure. I would ask the person who provides your liquid nutrition. Maybe the combo is too much. I think I remember the NUT saying RNY patients dump on over 5 g of sugar.
