Intro & pre-op liquid diet starts soon
Hi everyone...
Posted only once or twice on here a few months ago when i was going through pre op testing... now I finished everything, got a surgery date of 9/29 and am really starting to get terrified...
Next Thursday my 3 week liquid pre-op diet starts... 3-4 slim fast shakes per day and 2-6 servings of unsweetened applesauce, lf/sf pudding, and lf yogurt. Tried to do 1 day yesterday to prove to myself I could do it and didn't make it past the afternoon. Does anyone else have doubts about having the willpower?
I've been going to Overeaters Anonymous meetings for the past 2 1/2 years on and off but started up again a few months ago to help with the emotional issues since my stomach will be taking care of the food part of the excess eating...
Surgery is at Temple Univ. in Philly... anyone have any experience with them?

the pre-op diet sucks. period. i made it through the required 1 week for me. barely. and some people say 'if you cant do the liquid diet pre-op you arent ready for surgery' but i say that is bullsh*t, its hard. but you will get through it and it will all be a distant memory soon enough.
havent seen anyone on the boards having surgery at Temple, a couple of us are Pennsylvania hospital and U Penn sleevers..
going to OA is a great thing for you to be doing now, it will no doubt help you get a handle on head hunger and lifestyle changes post op.
a bit of advice- know your eating plan through and through, follow it, do what the doctor said, stay positive, dont weight on the scale but once a week, and dont fight the changes!

My doc didn't have me on a liquid pre-op diet, I was on an ultra-low-carb diet for the month before surgery. That sucked too but at least I got to chew things.
When you're suffering, best thing you can do is keep yourself busy. Idle time is deadly in terms of diets like this. Go out, bring your shake with you, and do something that is interesting or fun or productive. Clean out your garage. Volunteer somewhere. Just stay busy.
Also, what about putting your slimfast shakes in the blender with a bunch of ice? That will at least make them thicker and might trick you into feeling more satisfied. You can do the same thing with yogurt (make a smoothie. A yogurt-only smoothie. Or maybe add a little crystal lite or sf jello powder to flavor it?).
Every time I felt like I was going to break down and go eat the entire contents of our fridge, I'd grab hold of my bellyfat with both hands, knead it like playdough, and remind myself that THAT was why I was doing it all. I also posted horribly unflattering fat pictures of myself on the fridge. (That's kind of something that eating disordered people do, but it helped me at least. Whatever works, right?).
Spend a lot of time here on the boards. Everyone will support you, and if you're feeling like you can't do it, ask for support, and we'll all be here to cheer you on. It makes such a difference. You CAN do it, because you MUST in order to regain control of your weight and your life. So stop doubting yourself. Tell yourself that this is absolutely going to happen, because you will make it happen, and you have lots of resources for support. Post here every day if you have to. Every meal even. We'll be here. I'd wish you luck, but you don't need it. You already have what it takes.

The trick for me was to never let myself get hungry. Little hunger pang? Slug down some more liquid, anything I was allowed -- water, tea, sugar-free jello, popsicles, broth, etc etc. I was sloshing and I had to keep running to the bathroom, heh heh, but it worked. I kept something going in my mouth almost constantly, so I never felt deprived.
