Learned about a month ago that I'm anemic. Still not sure why. But thought this might be good info to know  :)

That's just ONE of the many problems that crop up for people that utilize the Mexican doctors.  Those that utilize a program that actually cares about their patients, instead of the money, get routine followup, and also learn about things like possible anemia, etc.

That's one of my bhig objections to those doctors.  They give very little in the way of "clearance" of patients, essentially cutting on anyone that presents the dollars; and they provide zero follow-up.  Most PCP's are ill equipped to deal with post bariatric surgery patients, and they don't have a clue about the necessary followup that should be done.

A person who has this surgery should be willing to research the issues themselves and use common sense. Whether or not they go to Mexico or USA.  Your health is your responsibilty.

Like somebody trying to lose three hundred pounds in a year- then when they are starving to death wondering what went wrong.   people have to learn to learn to eat right and lose weight accordingly using real foods and drinks not just diet supplements and diet foods.

It's like feeding hummingirds nutrisweet and the next day you wonder why they are dead on your porch.  There is a huge push in our society to get people to avoid natural whole foods and pursue manufactured foods and vitamins.  So when people can only eat three oz's of food and they fill up on diet drinks and processed food instead of water, dairy, grains, veggies, natural protiens, fats, and carbs they will have deficiencies.

With that said a person must assume all responsibilty for their own life after surgery, reading, researching, and pursuing medical care.

I am just gonna jump in here cuz I suspect Mexican doctors have just been bashed all to hell as cut and run doctors and do not give anyone any guidance towards followup and aftercare.

I was given a COMPREHENSIVE list of labs to have drawn every year, a comprehensive list of supplements to take.  I have seen PLENTY of stateside doctors who do not give their patient's any guidance on how to progress with food, what supplements to take, what labs to be drawn.

So, in short.

Brown flag on the "all Mexican surgeons suck" play.

I have a hard time imaging that Dr. Aceves doesnt give yall at least the same information that we are given, but being a part of this board, going to boards that talk about labs (like the DS board, or the RNY board or the main board) and learning about things is important.

I would ask OM why, if he had suuuuch a comprehensive aftercare program with his very important Surgeon, why in fact his iron bottomed out and he needed infusions?

My point, here, aside from brown flagging the "Mexican doctors suxxx" agenda that has surely been launched by the poster before me, is

WE HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR OURSELVES!!

TRACK YOUR LABS!!  Get them and TRACK them!  Do not rely on your doctor to follow your trends, they  just look at highs and lows.

We have GOT to be better advocates for our own health.

I thought I had asked you before about your anemia, was it H&H related, was it ferritin, it could have everything to do with your B12, your ferritin and/or your protein.

Edit to add

No I did not ask you because you had said you would post more information when you got your labs back.  So did you get your labs back?  What do they look like (numbers, what are your values). There are people who are glad to help, but they need specifics.

And I am sorry for my tone.  While Mexico does have some ****ty surgeons and plans, SO DOES THE STATES, and that stereotypical big brush bull**** lights my short hairs on fire.

obviously.  :}

Thanks for this comment.  I agree with you.  Can you share the detailed list of labs and supplements you were advised to take?  I always enjoy reading your comments.  Thanks for helping so many of us!

Sure thing ladyfriend.

Hold vitamin supplements for 3 days prior to lab draw – have them drawn fasting

ICD-9 Diagnosis code 783.12

CBC

Pro time, PT/INR

Iron, TIBC, ferritin, transferrin

Copper, Zinc, albumin

Comprehensive metabolic panel

Folate, Vitamin A (DO NOT EXPOSE TO LIGHT), *vitamin B 1, *vitamin B6 (*also do not expose to light), vitamin B12, vitamin D (Dhydroxy 25, 0,25 – NOT 1,25)

PTH (for use with calcium and vitamin D levels, where is calcium coming from)

Lipid panel, triglycerides, LDL, VLDL, HDL, cholesterol total.

This is what I was given, minus the PTH and the light information on the B1 and B6, this I learned after my first set of labs and asked for help.

hi Brandilynn,

Now I'm wondering if any of my labs are not correct. I didn't hold supplements for 3 days...

because my B12 came back fine (didn't hold before testing)...iron is low and the doctor said it indicates blood loss from somewhere...so I have weakness, headaches, tired all the time and it's hard to do anything except sit. I stand for a living at my job...
Lipid panel numbers were all perfect. I have to go to the labs for some other testing for vitamin levels. I was goinjg to go today but I think I'll go Thursday after 3 days of holding vitamins. I don't want to stop my iron... will that effect the test for vitamin levels?

Thanks again! I know this can be changed. I just want to do all I can to make it happen.

The holding - you are going to have different opines depending on which doctor you ask - on the maintenance board we had a lady give an example of her labs being high because she did not withhold, but then others never withhold.

About the iron, it would be helpful of for folks to know if the issues is in iron saturation, ferritin, hemoglobin, hematocrit. Usually bleeding is in hemoglobin and hematocrit.

Iron shoudnt change your vitamins, no m;am

but this - if you take your regular iron within 2 hours of

Dairy, calcium, whole grains, nuts, whole eggs (and maybe one more thing?  I need to check) you will not absorb it as well because those things and iron have the same receptor sites, and the other things will win over iron. OH! Caffeine and tannins also, do not take within 2 hours of coffee or tea or other caffeinated things.

the Proferrin does not have the same restrictions - so what KIND of iron, plus what you are taking it WITH and NEAR can make a huge difference in how you absorb it!

Also iron absorbs best in a vitamin C environment.

You are welcome girlie, folks here are glad to help and I just know what I have had to learn for me, other folks are much smarter and glad to help!

Just flop some numbers out and then "low" will be better understood by folks who can give us hints on how to make low better!

I totally agree...I would not blame this on my MX doctor. This is ALL ME! I have NOT done what I needed to do to talk care of myself. I have been feeling so great since my surgery (VSG) that I've skated by...sometimes taking my B12 and Vitamins...my diet could be better...no****ching my protein etc. I still have NO idea why I'm anemic. I just feel like Sh*t  and want to feel better so badly that I've been looking for answers everywhere...so I came here thinking just maybe others are having issues as well...so I have alot going on, my doctors are doing testing... within 2 weeks I have and upper and lower GI and next I have a procedure to help stop my periods ( although I've been told they are not the cause) but thrilled to stop them since at 46yrs and no reason for them...not helping iron levels.

So I'm coming from the stand point of: What can I do better...I'm done NOT taking care of myself. Up to this point it's been easy...now I MUST look at what I'm doing.
I didn't read anything about anemia before VSG. And I read and researched for a year...again this may not have anything to do with VSG. My doctor says I'm loosing blood from somewhere. I just wonder if it's a double deal...between what I've done to not take care of myself and bleeding somewhere...I am on asprin (325 a day) because I have a heart valve replacement.

Thank you for all the information...I really just want to feel better. And tell others: don't let the fact that you feel good make you forget to take care of yourself....no one else will.

Many folks here have iron issues and some folks can be helpful with ideas to pursue, but they need numbers.

Proferrin is a great iron that does not have all the *do not take with* caveats that regular iron does.  That will help with ferritin.

I took some other kind *I am having a bit of an aaneurysm from my small rage event :} ) so I am going to have to look back and find out what the name of it was, but that made my hemoglobin and hematocrit go way up, but did not much touch my ferritin.

Like I say too, B12 can be an issue too, you can have pernicious anemia which comes from B12 being low.

I know you do wanna feel better, and I am sorry to have had a rage event in a response to you, I just react poorly to OM and do not even care to look at his words.

There is another lady here, BabsinGa (?) who was having iron issues and they thought she was bleeding from somewhere, but did uppers and lowers and could not find the answer.

when you get to where you can get your lab results, please do post them and we can tap lab smarties to come and help us!!
