Surgery Cost - Covered by Insurance but HOLY COW!

The hospital alone was over $45k!!!  How is that reasonable???  Granted, insurance covered everything and negotiated a lower fees of about half of that cost.  But that is CRAZY!  And it doesn't cover the doctor's fees, which were another $10-12k.  No wonder health insurance is so damn expensive.

I know mine is covered as well, but I haven't seen the bill yet... I ended up having an emergency surgery the second day, and was hospitalized for 5 nights... yup... can't WAIT to see the grand total

I had my surgery done at Scripps Medical and the total was $64,000 and some change.  I was in the hospital for five days, used no pain meds and only had a few popcicles.  Way too expensive!

Oh yeah - my bill just came it was 50K - thank goodness for insurance because otherwise I never could have afforded surgery any time soon. Plus my insurance made me go to the best surgeon in the area (which I was going to anyway). I paid less for my surgery than when I did all liquid diet for 3 months! Amazing isn't it! The health care system is designed to screw the people without good insurance - sad really.

Luckily no one actually pays a hospital's charge price.  On average, insurance contracts let them pay about 38% of what the hospitals charge (that was for California in 2004).  For Medicare and Medicaid, it's much less.  I'm self-pay to the tune of $17,000.

Let's see. I saw one statement from the hospital for about $39,000 which seems cheap compared to the rest of you. Then another statement for $8000+ for my DVT and PE hospitalization! Wow!

I was self funded and my sleeve cost me £9000 uk pounds
That is the full cost plus follow up appointments for one year
Quite expensive.  Post code lottery meant that if I lived 20 miles away I would have got it on the NHS.Unfortunatley I was too light at over 327lb in Hampshire where I live.
Never mind that is why I work as hard and as long hours as I do!!!
