Virus = Carbs

 So, it seems as if the grubby kids at school have given me an intestinal virus.

My doc says that I have to do the BRAT diet.  Carbs, carbs, carbs.  I'm frustrated but I know that she's probably right.  I just hope it won't be too much of a setback.

What would you do in a situation like this?

Bananas - Rice - Applesauce and Toast...
It was my understanding that this diet during a stomach bug was only if you absolutely could not stand to go without eating.

The best thing to do is drink clear fluids and only eat if you have to.
Anything you put in your stomach has the potential to react badly until the virus plays itself out. But the BRAT food items are the least likely to react.
So if your really hungry, try a bite or two of those items.

You can go a day or so with just fluids, it wont hurt and will actually help the virus to go away faster. IMHO

Anyway, this is what I was told by a doctor when my children were ill.

Hope you feel better soon.

What about Chicken Broth?? I doubt the BRAT diet would cause much of a setback. You need to replace the potassium/sodium you are losing with a stomach bug. Bananas are good for that. I hope you feel better soon!

The BRAT diet is to keep up your electrolytes and bind up your bowels (in theory.) It doesn't really do much but doctors keep pushing it anyway. If you're vomiting, get some Gatorade and water and just try to keep hydrated. Broth would be good too, put don't push yourself to eat until your stomach has calmed down. If you've got diarrhea from a virus, it really doesn't matter what you eat. It's going to keep coming out until the virus runs its course, so eat what sounds good to you and push lots of fluids.
