What to expect during surgery-ladies only
I did NOT have a catheter, your doctor will decide whether or not you need one, and if you are nervous (and you need one), ask him to put it in after you are asleep (they usually do this anyway, but it never hurts to ask). I had to strip completely down, and put on a robe. I had a nurse take pictures of my surgery, so I can confidently say the only thing that was exposed was my abdomen, your upper and lower parts are covered with a gown, or a blanket of some kind. Besides, it calmed my nerves to know that they have DEFINITELY seen way worse then me (hopefully this will work for you too).
I have not had my procedure yet but I am an RN and please know the medical staff is very focused on your care and their work related to your care. They see naked bodies of all shapes and sizes every day for years and honestly we will never notice if you've had the Brazilian wax or not lol. we will notice your blood pressure, pulse, respirations, did you spike a temp etc etc etc not your belly or stretch marks (I have plenty!)
Yes, there is no modesty and no privacy and that's because during your procedure we need to "get at" every part of you at all times if need be.
The best surgery? The one that's documented as "uneventful"! May we all have an uneventful procedure!
No catheter. I went into surgery in one gown with no panties on, came out of surgery in a different color gown with these lovely netty panties on. Plus, I was having my period that day. I went into surgery with this industrial sized maxi-pad, came out with a different pad in the panties.
Honestly, I lost all modesty after giving birth. I realized medical professionals, especially surgical staff, have seen it all, and my half shaven girly bits is NOT going to bother them or effect them in any fashion.
I stayed in the hospital gown as long as possible because of incisions, them checking my wounds, changing pads/panties etc etc. There was no reason to dirty up my clothing when everything I needed was provided. I know that having our own clothes on makes some of us feel more comfortable/relaxed, but at the end of the day, I would much rather dirty up the hospital gowns/supplies than ruin my clothes.
And, believe me, as soon as I could, I was putting on my make-up and requesting my hair products. This was after a 5 day ICU stay recovering from major complications, and I knew that having my "face" on would not only make me feel better, but it would truly give me the extra motivation to make my way to the regular surgical recovery floor.
