Shoot I just want them to know about the different procedures out there and understand all the labs we need to keep up on. I went to Urgent care yesterday and not one person knew what the VSG was, same day of surgery no one knew what it was. They need to keep up on things. I know It's a new procedure but damn it's been a few yrs that my surgeon has been doing it. However the hospital I go to he recently started I was his 2nd vsg patient there. I'm currently looking for a new doctor that has and understanding of bariactric patients my pcp doesn't, hes real old school.

Thinking out loud...a gastrectomy is not a new procedure...its been around for ages and performed on people with stomach cancer, etc.
RNY has been around a long time too so the medical people who are unaware are just being slackers.
So why aren't WLS patients continuing follow up labs etc. with their bariatric team?  We all need to do our homework and know what to look for on our lab results.  In this day and age you cannot expect for others to have your best interest in mind.

As a weight loss procedure it is fairly new and Aetna my insurance just recently started to cover it. Yeah It's been around 60+ years for stomach cancer, however the medical teams need to be more aware that it's a WLS also. What I was getting at is I get the dumb ass look when I go to urgent care that they don't know what VSG is. So it's obvious it is fairly new esp. in my location. I'm sure University of MD Baltimore would know what it was but like I said my hospital isn't as familar with it. They treated me just at they would an RNY patient, which I was fine with.

My Bariatric team does all the follow up labs but it has to go thru my PCP also they are great with all that. However my  PCP is old school and doesn't understand all the WL proccedures 100% therefor I had to give him a short run down of what it was. And I agree with ya with we all need to do our own homework and know our lab results, I don't always trust what the docs have to say and sometimes I disagree with them. (they don't like that too much) But there is only one person that is going to look out for me and that is me.

I'm lucky, my PCP had the VSG done for herself. So she is very familar with all of the labs needed.

I just would like to see the Surgeons or the Process of Options explain what a Bougies is before surgery, If there are choices in sizes or Surgeons that offer different size, and the most important thing is to not allow patients to go home the next day or start them on food too early after surgery.

Having just went to the ER on Monday and being assigned the dr with the "God" complex and the "know-it-all attitude who kept asking me what kind of a by-pass was a VSG.  I told him what VSG stood for and he wanted to know what kind of a sleeve did they slip over my stomach?  I finally said a partial Gastrectomy and he said very snidely, " then why don't they just call it a partial gastrectomy?"  I wearily told him I didn't know I didn't name it.  He was very condescending, very haughty and certainly not a fellow I would choose for my personal physician.  I have liver disease and I always tell them I have it because it shows on my bloodwork which is of course the first thing they do.  I have autoimmune issues which has caused me some rare medical issues so of course the first thing he askes me is if I drink...NO I DO NOT!  I gave him the name of my hepatologist who has an office right across the street in case he wanted to check.  I would love if Drs could act like they were not only human but compasionate, the male nurse in charge of my care took a few minutes and went and looked up my VSG, my PCB and my CREST and came back a few minutes later and was able to intelligently piece together my special needs in medication and was able to guide the DR in how to treat me.  (I was dehydrated 2 bags and I was out of there)  Personally I think Drs have at thier desposal lots of information we don't, if they come across a patient that has something they are not familiar with not to act like it doesn't exsist because they don't know about it.  Educating themselves shouldn't stop at medical school graduation.  Some things are not gone into in depth in medical school but just touched upon.  That is why we have specialists.

In my program, we had to attend a weekly class for 3 months. It was taught by a psychiatrist. We learned things like what the amygdala and the hypothalamus do, and the difference between satiation and satiety. Interesting, but I would have benefited more if they had spent those classes discussing the surgery, how it works, and the lifestyle changes we would need to make.

Also, even though my surgeon does bypasses, sleeves, and bands, the psychiatrist teaching that class, and actually, all the staff members, act as if everyone is having a bypass. All instructions are written for bypass patients, and all the class material is geared for bypass patients.
For example, they tell you that you will be lactose intolerant after surgery, that you will most likely experience dumping, and that you can't take NSAIDs ever again ~ all true of bypass patients, but not of sleeve patients.
It's better to be hated for who you are than loved for who you're not.

Great question!!

1.  All bariactric patients are not the same.
2.  RNY is not the only WLS out there.
3.  VSG patients are way different than the other WL patients.
4.  We have feelings and are not second class citizens.
5.  We deserve the same respect that someone who quits smoking gets for their ability to stop a deadly habit.
6.  We are knowledgeable about our procedures and our needs, LISTEN to us when we try to educate you.

I could go on and on and on...sad thing is that I am a healthcare professional and I am embarrassed by the way my colleagues act on a daily basis.  Where is the compassion and understanding for diversity of the human race?
