Hello again OH Family! It's finally here and I am so thrilled! I've got my hospital bag ready to go with chapstick, comfy slipper socks, books and other entertainment items I doubt I'll need. :) At home I have my cream soups stocked up, food processor, protein powder and protein shakes from Costco, and plenty of water. Am I missing anything? My doctor was a little vague on what to consume the first couple of days-- clear liquids only? I'd love to be able to get right back into drinking my pre-packaged protein shakes, but I can live with just mixing the powder with water for the first several days if that's what's necessary.

I am so ready to join all of you in your great success!

First of all, congratulations!  My first week was clear liquids only.  So, I stocked up on SF popsicles, SF jello, and broth.  Clears are anything you can see through at room temperature, regardless of color.  I would definitely make sure you know what your surgeon's plan is and follow it religiously.  In fact, I would call the office today if you're unclear.  The last thing you want to do is be at home, confused, and stressed in the first couple of days post-op.

Here's some advice for after the surgery:
-You will gain weight at first!  This is due to the IV fluids that are pumped into you, your body's stress response, and swelling.  Don't be alarmed when you step on the scale - it's normal.  I gained 8 lbs from the time I left home preop to the time I returned.
-Walk, sip, and walk some more.  I know we all say it, but it is so true.  I felt better when I was walking then any other time.  It gets all the air out of your abdomen and speeds your recovery.  Water will be your lifeline.  It feels funny at first, but you have to drink to stay hydrated and prevent a return trip to the ER.
-Advocate for yourself.  If you are hurting, say so.  If you have questions ask!  Again, you don't want to get home and realize that you don't know what you're supposed to do.
-Don't forget this is major surgery.  You will be tired.  Rest.  Let your body recover.

Good luck to you!

Do your best to stick as closely to your diet and exercise program as possible.

BUT, do not beat yourself up if you cheat (we ALL do).  Just get it done and don't make a habit out of it.

Don't panic if you stall, just STICK TO YOUR PROGRAM.  fOR SOME REASON, WOMEN TEND TO STALL A lot MORE THAN MEN DO, BUT IF YOU STICK WITH IT, YOU will BREAK THE STALL.

Don't let anyone discourage you, just stick with it.  It IS worth it.
