VSG was FIRST done as a STAND ALONE WLS in ~2000 done by a D.S. surgeon might of been Hess...not sure, since it was FIRST of the TWO PART Duodenal Switch
I think ~1990 was the first STAND ALONE D.S. The DS stomachs were made BIGGER back in the day prior...so VSG stomachs were bigger back in the day too. ...Now about 70-75% stomach removed w/ D.S. ...for VSGrs NOW...I think 80-90% stomach removed.
but OLD TIME... PARTIAL GASTRECTOMIES most similar to VSG surgery cuz no malababsorption ,altho HUGE stomachs, half stomachs, more antrum taken off than fundus n vice versa etc have been performed for peptic ulcers, stomach cancer since 1880 sumthin...the first one!
IF looking at long term complications what to expect...post VSG....best to look at long term complications in PARTIAL GASTRECTOMY. You'll get yer BEST info there. Its really sumthin too!

VSG became OFFICIAL...a recognized legitimate BARIATRIC SURGERY...STAND ALONE...by AMA with its own CPT (current procedural terminology) Code 43775 meanin...insurance companies NOW have a way to be BILLED for it.
I had VSG back in the day when IT WAS experimental/investigational...a simple appeal and I was IN.
People STILL have been denied at pre-authorization for VSG being investigational/experimental....just another bogus hoop to jump, them insurance companies will try anythin to DISCOURAGE you from GETTIN on with a HEALTHIER LIFE..don't let em get away w/ it ...THAT EASY anyway!!
....hope for the best...prepare for the worst or sumthin like that ,-)
On OLD TIMERS here....a few hang out here that are 3+ years out...like me...no where else to go or feel like we're still useful in some way...or a few need to maintain their pedestal standing and push an agenda of some sort, Im ok-you're still fat cuz you ate a handful of Oreos last year ,self-stimmin finger waggin types.
MAJORITY of OLD TIMERS...are OUT LIVING THEIR LIVES...and are not to be bothered with some of the nonsense of this board, or issues involving JUST POST OPS. As it should be right!

VSG IS a DO IT YERSELF TYPE SURGERY....with MANY PHASES/STAGES ....YOU MUST GO THROUGH ALONE! OF ALL THE WLS ...less risk and short or.long term complications...there is LITTLE MAINTENANCE to this thing...once ya get past the dietary stages...only maintenance for LIFE is 3 Vitamins/minerals!! since we don't get required vits/mins from small amounts of food we eat. eta: ANNUAL LABS is also a requirement
So you SEE WHY....people don't tend to stick around here!
There IS the VSG Maintenance Group...we used to send OLD TIMERS checking in THERE....but I don't anymore since it has NOW become OH VSG MAIN JR. ...most of those "vets" want everyone to go there and ask ?s now...vs come here and HELP.
OLD TIMERS do CHECK IN HERE...every now and again...I suggest doing an OH search " VSG 5 yrs post op" " VSG 6 yrs post op"
The oldest Ive seen here is 8 yrs post op...I don't count BabsinTx (7 yrs out link you were given above)
She had VSG 3.5yrs ago...she isn't a WLS virgin.
Here's a few I HAVE BOOKMARKED! Maybe some interest...like I said they're not too active on boards anymore...can check on their "LATEST POSTS" and see if they have added anything recent.
Also when you check OH VSG BOARD MEMBER DIRECTORY....IF a VSGr hasn't been active on the board in past 1-2 yrs...can't remember, they are REMOVED from directory until they post on the board again.
I used to go thru the directory back in the days and get some old-timers profiles...anyway...here ya go

I always say....YA GET WHAT YA GIVE with VSG....so try not to publically ***** about it when YOU **** IT UP!! even if its 1 meal! I don't! I try hard to fix it myself...read read read, tweak it, throw on a patch, pop a supp, try try sumthin else ...whatever it takes to make it WORK FOR ME!
can't promise to tell ya WHAT YA WANNA HEAR...or the WAY YA WANNA HEAR IT.....but this is AS GOOD AS IT GETS...as far as information & support on VSG ...THEE best public VSG forum on the net. Im an old goat....Ive been around ok ,-)
