Soup with stuff in it-- why is this okay? Or isn't it?

I'm well on my way to eating normal foods, and I had a thought today involving not drinking around meal time. Won Ton Soup. For all intents and purposes, it's okay to eat this soup. It's all broth and a squishy won ton that to this day has gone down fine for me. If we go by the rules, though, eating the won ton would mean we can't eat the broth-- it's a liquid, and no liquids allowed 30 mins before or after meals. Am I right on this? How does this apply to ALL soups, stews, etc? It sucks to think I can't ever have soup with actual stuff in it.

Eating soup would be a no for me and my nutritionist.
I'm not allowed to drink anything after my first bite of food for 60 min.

You can have soup with stuff in it if it sucks that bad for you, just be prepared to be hungry an hour or less later and remain hungry until your next meal unless you put more food in  that day.  the no eating with liquid is recommended because it makes things easier for us with regard to satiety.  but if you are one of those people who don't have to deal with that or are prepared to do the grind then by all means, have your soup. Stews are a different principle because they contain far less liquid ratio wise than soup and the emptying out of the stomach is not as extreme as funneling the little food we can fit, through with liquid.

My plan says drink the broth first, then eat the the 'stuff.'  We're only required to wait 5 minutes after drinking before eating.  I don't eat wonton soup because of the wonton wrappers, but I eat other soups that have meat and veggies.  In fact, my favorite food in the world is Pho.  It's god's perfect food, although I don't eat the noodles.

I'm 4 weeks out and eating a lot of soup, but won ton is too carby. Egg drop is a mainstay for me. I have to pitch the packet of crunchies though or I'll eat them! But they were bad for me preop as well.

I see your point....but, there was nothing in my paperwork forbidding soup with chunks of food in it...and I don't remember reading much about it on here.....I've been eating french onion soup (the broth & cheese) from pretty early out, with no problems...and now I can eat creamy chicken soup (with chunks of chicken)....also beef barley soup...etc...

I find soup satisfying & easy on the tummy, and it helps me get in more fluids, since I have a hard time with that....

I don't eat much of the chunks of whatever is in it, I find the meat, leave all the pasta & veggies behind....

My paperwork does say no fluids 30 minute before or after meals....which I follow pretty strictly, other than soup...but soup is the meal (i wouldn't drink anything before or after it)

The whole idea behind not drinking and eating at the same time or within a certain time frame is to help you feel satisfied longer, which helps avoid snacking, limits calorie intake, etc.

If you have a soup you can eat that meets your dietary requirements and leaves you satisfied until your next meal, then it is probably not a problem.

For me, I could not drink the broth of a soup and still have enough room to get in the protein I need.  I have also found that I do get hungry if I didn't eat a dense protein for my meal.  Soup also tends to have more sodium than I want (especially the broth) in my diet.  So soup in general is off the list for me.

Chili does work if it is thick, because its almost all protein then.

Everyone is different but I LOVE Egg Drop Soup because of the EGG! Cand oo eggs by itself though!?!?!?   I do it for the PROTEIN!
I found I can drink soup and count it towards my liquids  no matter if I've just had anything to drink, but once I start eating the Chunks of whatever it stops me from finishing   (I get full) so I drink it first and then eat whatever. You'll figure it out just like me one day! lol  Good luck!

My Nut said to choose soups wisely. Choose either thick with ingredients like Chili or Stew, or choose a liquid broth based soup. Wonton soup would actually be neither so it is one that I would avoid because it is mostly broth but then this big chuck of "food."

I don't consider eating soup although I would love to eat it. Chili is another story. You get protein from the beans an meat(however, my sleeve did not like it!!!).  I cannot eat soup with other things in it because I will not get my protein in for the day even with a shake in the morning.  There is no room for the other "stuff".  If you put potatoes and noodles etc. in your sleeve, how much protein do you get in that meal especially if you can only eat 1/4 cup?
