does your dentist need to know you've had vsg?  i am going next week and the only reason i'm asking is because he's my cousin and haven't told anyone on that side yet.  if he needs to know, i have no problem telling him, just curious?

obviously, any dr.'s dealing with internal medicine i've told. lol.

i wouldnt think that he would have to know... unless you needed some oral surgery and they ask about prior surgeries... But im not sure, good question. Im due for my check up in February....

Personally, I don't see why your dentist, or any other physician (aside from your primary doctor or Gyne need to know).. The gyne only because of hormone changes... But it's your personal business and will not effect aspects of a dental appointment.

I told my dentist only because I was getting fitted with dentures  and any weight loss after fitting he needed to know my dentures  have became so big now I have to go back to have them fitted again.

He told me he only needed to know this info if I was not using dentures there was no reason to tell him he said.

My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

I guess not necessarily, HOWEVER: bariatric patients have less saliva in their mouths which can cause dental problems like more cavities.

My dentist recommended a fluoride toothpaste prescription called prevident and using the biotene line of mouth moistening products. We did notice in the time between my vsg and dental exam i actually had a cavity which I never, ever do!

Less saliva in the mouth causes bacteria to stick to teeth and just drinking water isnt going to cut it.

That's good to know, maybe people should get fluoride drops and just add it to a drink each day. I use to do that with my children because I lived in an area where there was no fluoride in our drinking water. Just not sure if it would help our older teeth.

I would not think you would need to disclose it if you choose not to unless there is a question concerning prior surgeries.

They only need to know if you are having major work done. It makes a difference what medications they prescribe for pain.
