I'm still in the submitting stage to insurance, but I'm curious I now have varicose veins sooooo bad that they ache and hurt, and are bulging on the surface. I've had a ultra sound done on them because of this and they tell me my flaps are stuck shut and what not. I'm curious though after you've had your surgery if you had them do they go away?  I mean if you lose weight your relieving some of the stress on them already right?

I recently has surgery on October 31st and had some varicose veins on my calfs.  Since the pre-op diet and surgery I am down about 35 pounds and my legs are starting to look and feel so much better.  They used to hurt and ache at times but seem so much better.

In the past I have had a procedure called Sclerotherapy done which Is a non-surgical procedure for treating varicose veins. The vein is injected using a tiny needle with an irritating solution ( a sclerosant ). This causes inflammation in the lining of the vein walls, making the walls of the veins stick together thereby closing down the vein. This forces the blood to flow into the deeper veins and improves circulation.  Over a period of time any vessels destroyed by the injected solution will be re-absorbed by the body much like a bruise is.

I'm not worried about the looks I just want the aching pain to go away....thanks for sharing your info I appreciate it

i have this and the disease is called venous reflux. indeed, yes the valves in  those veins are stuck open/shut and no longer operate properly which causes the bood to go thru there at a high volume and no control which causes the huge ropey varicose veins.

I had them preop and they did not get better in nearly 2 years post op.

The injecting saline/whatever into them won't work...they are too large. The have to go in and put stints in those vessels to make the valves  ope/'shut again like they are supposed to.

I am having the procedure on my right leg Wed Nov 30 Th and the left leg Dec 27Th.

I hear you about deductibles being met and mine is for this year and so im my out of pocket maximum so these procedures plus one done on my shoulder Mon and one scheduled for my foot on Dec 7 should get me all done this year for no additional cost.

The damage is already done from carrying the excess weight for years, losing weight now can't correct what has already happened, the valves are worn out and nothing short of surgery will repair them.   getting the weight off now might keep them from getting worse but can't fix what has suffered damage already. The only thing I notice now is that the veins are way more prominent since I have lost 98#  than they were before, covered in fat. They still hurt and feel hot to the touch and are painful when trying to do certain activities.

good luck

I know I have a few, and they are becoming more prominent as I lose.. from my understanding the weight loss won't improve them though.

My friend who had WLS 19mo ago or so and is at goal found hers when she lost a lot, they are still there.. no fixing them unless you go through whatever tx is needed.. they don't go away.

Thanks for the replies ladies!  I'm not worried if they go away.... I just want the aching to stop!!! Like you said the damage is done... I'm cool with that, it is what it is. I just want to be able to come home from a 9 hour shift of standing all day and not cry because my feet, ankles, and legs ache so bad

That is one of my major worries of standing allll day I can't sip sip sip water like the desk job's do, so for me too get my water in?  This could be really interesting too say the least

You may want to look into compression stockings, they will help with the achy-ness.
