I am suffering with a cough/cold since Thanksgiving. My surgeon said any Tylenol brand cold medicine is safe. However, I am not noticing that it is working very well. Does anyone have any suggestions on cough and/or cold medicine that is safe on VSG pouch instead of Tylenol brand? i.e. Mucinex DM or Robitussin DM?

I use Nyquil to sleep at night.  If your cough gets worse, go to the doc and ask for a prescription cough syrup, like Tussinex.

Thanks thin1. According to my surgeon no NSAIDS ever... Increases the chances of bleeding stomach ulcers, which is not good on any stomach much less such a small one.

My doc said no NSAIDS either. They are harsh on the stomach.... and now we have a smaller one. Tylenol is king.

Just read the labels - most cold medicines do not contain NSAIDs (unless you grab something like Advil brand or generic equivalent). However, the actual COLD medicines part of the drugs are usually the same drugs - NSAIDs are fever reducers/pain killers, not cold medicines. So, changing brands may not necessarily help if the cold medicine part is still the same. Again, compare labels. Just avoid ingredients like aspirin, naproxen sodium (brand name Aleve), and ibuprofen (brand name Advil).

I was never told to stay away from NSAIDs after my surgery, but I just so happen to be highly allergic to them anyway, so no NSAIDs for me, EVER!

Truthfully, I don't think the NSAID's are going to hurt through a short term cycle of a cold/flu/headache/body aches. It's the long term use that is harmful to our smaller stomach!

No ma'am I was told it could only take once taking an NSAID after surgery to get a bleed Ora sore. My surgeon nurse said that because our stomachs are smaller every time we're eating we are slowly stretching our stomaches out which caused it to be even thinner. Thus making NSAIDS quite a danger to WLSPs. My Drs went so far as to call all of my other Drs for me and told them to put them on my allergy list.
