Elina, thanks so much for posting this link! I've read some of MacMadam's blog, but hadn't stumbled across this yet. Interesting article, and the links within it to the research are great.

I found this quote especially telling:

"When starvation studies have been done on the obese, they find that the impact of the starvation diet is much less. Our bodies have fat stores designed to get us through a famine (i.e., a diet) and when we have a famine (i.e., a diet), those fat stores get used. The drastic slowdown of the metabolism doesn't happen until those fat stores are largely gone -- which takes a lot longer for the obese than for those who only have to lose 10-25 pounds."

5'9" All weight lost post-op. Goal weight determined by body composition testing.

My doctor boils it down this way,  he says, " If this starvation mode was the real thing, no one would ever die of starvation".  He also says, " Have you seen the malnourished children with the distended bellies in Africa?  That is from protein deficiency.  People who are starving look like they are starving".  Of course he backs it all up with studies and research.

The same thing happened to me. My doctor suggested that I increase calories and aerorbic excersize and within a week I was down 7 lbs. Best, J
