When you're speaking about the size of a bougie, it's measured in a French Catheter Scale.
1 French = .33mm

So a 34 Bougie is 11.3mm diameter
A 40 Bougie is 13.2mm diameter

Just thought ya might like to know!

36F Volume (assumes 12" length)

(36 x.33mm/2) ^2 x 3.1415 x 303mm/ 100 = 34ml=1.1oz

The stomach isn't rigid, though, it's a muscle, it  flexes,  and food continually moves out.  That's why capacity is greater than raw volume.  My 'capacity' is about 2- 2 1/2oz..

Ok, I will bite.  What is a bougie and how do you say it?

A bougie (think boo G) is a tube that goes down your throat and into your stomach.  The surgeon uses it as a guide for creating a staple line (you can see some good info on you tube on it).  I have a 40 French - and since you have Dr. Averbach you will too!

A lot think smaller is better - but as you go smaller the risk of leaks and strictures can increase - so I was happy I was getting the 40.  Dr. A told me it's not just the bougie size, but how close the surgeon goes to the bougie - and he goes nice and tight and then oversows, so it's even tighter.  With Dr. A you will have plenty of restriction!

Good luck!
