Detoxing from Carbs (again)

I just had to come here today and confess that I have let the carbs creep back into my life.  That spells trouble for me!  Carbs may not be evil for every VSGer, but they are for me.  Eating carbs, makes me crave more carbs, and the vicious cycle must be broken.  I know from experience that it will take three rather crappy days for me to rid my body of the carb cravings.  But I'm committed.  The other thing carbs are for me is a potential slider.  Not all carbs are, but if anything is a slider, it typically has carbs in my world.

So, today is day 1 of re-aligning myself with low low carbs.  Anyone else wanting to or needing to jump on my band wagon, go right ahead!

I read a book on the effect carbs have on our bodies and our brains a few months ago.  I forget the title, but here is a basic description of what happens.  And I know this is true for me because I can FEEL it happening.  And it sucks.  Carbs are my drug of choice.

Serotonin and insulin

Here is how ingesting sugar -- or some carbohydrate that is broken down into sugar after digestion -- can alter our mood for the better. When we digest carbohydrates, our blood sugar levels rise, and then insulin is secreted, lowering the blood levels of most amino acids with the exception of tryptophan, which is a precursor to serotonin. When there is more tryptophan than other amino acids, it enters the brain at a higher rate. The brain then produces more serotonin.

Serotinin is a substance found both in our brains and in our gastrointestinal tract. Serotonin has many functions. In the brain, it acts as neurotransmitter, and it helps to regulate mood.

Antidepressants are also called serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, preventing the supply of serotonin in the brain from going down. However, antidepressants are not the only way to elevate serotonin levels. Many ordinary people self-medicate when they are feeling depressed by eating lots of carbohydrates. We don't need a doctor to prescribe us a placebo. We crave carbs when we are feeling down, and eating carbs can be an effective means of elevating our mood. The problem is that the effect only lasts for a little while, and then the patient comes crashing down, in need of an even higher dose of carbs.

We all slip. I have found that I can have an occasional dessert or something but if I have more than one carb "meal", then it's ALL over. It's all about knowing yourself. I have to PLAN for carbs or I overdo it. Every single time.

Carbs are my nemesis.

Back on the low carb wagon and get ready for carb headaches for the next few days.

Carbs are my nemesis too.

They try to creep back in, especially this time of year, so I'm always minfdul of how many I consume. I'm more than 2 years post-op and still work to limit carbs to less than 40 grams per day.

I am joining the bandwagon since I was on vacation last weekend and didn't prep very well. The good thought about all of this is that I will be prepared when I go home for Christmas.  I have 14 days to battle the carb monster and see if I can get off 5 lbs for my goal of 180.

I am there with you, silly_sweet.   They have the same effect on me.  Besides boostin my blood sugar and making me feel lethargic to boot.  Not to say that I never have any processed carbs, but they are not compatible with healthy life for me, so I try to avoid them as much as possible.  Good luck with your detox.  Good on you for recognizing the problem and acting on it.
