Duh. How much is too much?

So I have been viligent about taking all of my supplements/meds.  Today as I shuffled the million bottles I seem to have I found a bottle of bariatric iron.  Duh.  I thought it was in the multi, but checking my paperwork sure enough it was separate.  I was constipated before taking the iron, so miralax and colace daily, here I come...

I will have to take 4 colace a day plus miralax in an amount tbd.  Anyone happen to know how much is too much?  It is way under what they had me take for a colonscopy, but this is different as it will likely be long term.

Thanks, ya'll are a great bunch of people :)

I too have gotten very constipated from both iron and calcium.  I stopped taking iron at all before surgery, only calcium, but then I stopped the calcium because of constipation.

Since surgery, I have been taking VitaLady's Tender Calcium (with magnesium) and Proferrin heme iron polypeptide.  I take one colace daily, and lots of fiber.  This seems to do the trick.  I am not good about separating calcium from iron like you're supposed to, so I am hoping that the Proferrin is as good as they say.  My iron levels were a little low presurgery.

I also found the constipation improved when I started adding more veggies into my diet, about a month ago.  I still do a protein supplement each day in my coffee, so I can still meet my protein targets even eating more veggies.

Veggies are not in my near future (still on full liquids).  I have forgotten to add the benefiber to my shakes, and I will restart that- thanks for the reminder about the fiber.  I had no idea calcium could constipate you??  Thanks for your other suggestions, I will check them out.

Did your doctor expressly ask you to take iron? Mine asks his band and RNY patients to take it, but said I didn't need to. Maybe that's the fact we don't have the same malabsorption issues? Perhaps that was also based on looking at my pre-op test levels too. If you think it will present such significant issues for you, this may be something you want to double-check with your doc.

Constipation was a big problem for me prior to surgery. Not a single problem since surgery - this is what I do:
2 heaping Tbsp Benefiber in my shake each morning
500 mg Magnesium 2 x day (take with Calcium)
Fiber Gummys - didnt think these would help but they do. I take 2-6 a day, and they are my treat.

I think everyone has to find their own formula, but I wanted to stay away from stool softeners. I have used Mirilax twice since surgery and it works, but I dont use it daily. I want to have something that my body is not used to that I can use when I am constipated. I have even been taking iron and still no constipation!

Never even heard of fiber gummies before.  Can't eat anything at the moment, but I will be hunting some of those down for sure.

My NUT told me to tae the iron.  I think I am just going to go every other day with it for now.  I absolutely do not want to have to take all of this crap medicine (no pun intended) for the rest of my life, but somewhere there is healthy alternative.  Thank you both for your suggestions- they are good ones :)
