pre-op diet issues
VSG on 01/17/12
My doc put me on a pre-op diet of 1000 calories per day with at least 60 grams of protien. Translation: 3 protein shakes and one modest meal. I was kicking butt on this plan for the first 2 weeks(lost 13 pounds in 14 days). Now in week 3 I find my stomach feels "upset" when I drink my morning shake. I tried upping my carbs a little bit and I felt better for about an hour. After lunch I'm so sleepy I fall asleep at my desk. Any ideas suggestions. I stay hydrated and I haven't had any bathroom issues with this. I want to be sure I'm doing this right...Anyone else been here or have any suggestions or comments? I have 2 more weeks before surgery and I don't really want to feel this yucky for that long.
I know exactly how you feel. I have only 4 days left on my pre-op diet, but have had problems dealing with the protein drinks. I love Nectar, but it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth. I sort of like Isopure, and really like Unjury and Jay Rob. This morning I mixed my Unjury Strawberry Sorbet in with plain ff greek yogurt and I thought I was in heaven! In the beginning I had the shakes and weak feelings, but I added broccoli (healthy carbs) to my light dinner meal plus an occasional snack of jerky (1 oz only). I've managed to stay around 700 calories and over 80 g. protein. Good luck with your remaining time... before you know it, it will all be over!
My pre-op diet is clear liquids and protein shakes, a minimum of 5 per day. I can have sugar free jello and crystal light in water also. I was told that it will get easier as I go, but today has been extremely hard for me. My surgery is next Wednesday, January 11!! woooohoooo I love this site, it has helped me stay on track so much. Best of luck to you!!!!
I had problems with the protein shakes and nausea. First I tried lactose free - that works well for most people. I finally had to switch to egg protein, but I was a very unusual case. Let Dr. Davidson's office know about the problems you're having - Allison was great at working with me on my issues.

I will put a call in tomorrow to Dr. Davidson's office. I tried boiling eggs and keeping them with me through the day Friday and I felt better. I took a good hard look at my calorie intake and I was actually below 800 calories the last few days(due to feeling "icky" when drinking the shakes) so that explains the sleepiness. I have found that drinking chicken broth(from chicken noodle soup) is a good pick me up too. I have issues with sucralose and aspartame in large doses so that may be part of the issue as well. We'll see what they say tomorrow. Thanks again for all the responses.
