Black cherry juice to lower uric acid- related to ketosis?

Hi,

So my uric acid is high.  Researched it a bit and this can lead to gout and arthritis- yea, looking to avoid that.  I get to drink more :)  I found online suggestions to drink black cherry juice- anyone know if this works?  Wan't planning on adding juice into the diet, but if it works then I will try.

Is it possibly related to ketosis?

Finally, I really think it may be linked to the ursidon (spelling?- gallbladder meds).  Before surgery I did a 2 week stint on a full liquid diet (this was before the official 2 week stint) and I never lost an ounce, retained a ridiculous amount of fluid, had blood in the urine... the NUT and Docs told me to stop the liquid diet.  I did, but I also backed off the urisodon.  It resolved itself after I stopped taking it.  Post op I started taking it again and noticed the exact same pattern so I went down to 1 per day instead of 2.  I will chat with the doc about this next week, but in the mean time I was wondering if anyone had any info or insigthts on this.  Thanks :)

I know that cherry juice concentrate will help lower the acid. I have gout and when I have a flair up I get the cherry juice and it helps but it's like 15$ a bottle. I find it in the dairy department also.
Good luck

Thanks.  That is all I needed- somebody who tried it before and found it to work.  Going to pour myself a glass now...  Hope the calories and carbs are not too bad!  Found it by the way for $10 at the Vitamin Shoppe if you happen to have one near you...

Happy Teacher, my dad has gout and drinks it as well. He swears by it when he is having a flare up!

How much do you recommend- 2 tablespoons to 8 ounces of water is way too strong.  I had to use about 16 ounces to make it tolerable.  One of these a day??

Thanks Tray for posting by the way :)

Not sure- I am new to this.  My humble opinion is that the juice will not hurt us, other than be very aware of the carb count.  I am afraid of this stuff messing with my joints and arthritis and gout, so I am willing to deal with the carbs.  My plan for now is 2 tablespoons a day of the concentrate and I will see how the next set of labs go.  I just posted a smoothie recipe that uses the juice in a high protein smoothie- not too shabby and it helps me get the protein and the juice.  I do not like just drinking the stuff by itself.

I feel I am qualified to add my two cents in.  I have had gout now for several years.  I tried natural remedies for several years to try to combat it and they really did nothing.  I tried cherry juice, cherry extract, ate cherries, etc.  No change.

The only that truly worked for me and I have not had an attack since (over 2 years now) is starting a maintenance dose of allopurinol.

High uric acid is caused by two things:  eating foods high in purines and by having "lazy" kidneys that aren't efficient at eliminating the uric acid.

Cherries did not work for me.....but people really stand by them so its worth a shot.  You need to eat them regularly though.  It's the flavinoids in the cherries that helps reduce the uric acid in the blood stream.

Other ways to help reduce uric acid are:

1.  Adequate water intake (important to avoid kidney stones also)

2.  Eat a lower purine diet (avoid shellfish, organ meats, alcohol)

3.  Exercise - helps increase circulation

Hope this helps you.  I'm anticipating a gout attack for me after surgery.......not gonna be fun.

EDIT:  Edited to add that I don't think it is the ursidol that is causing it.  That is a bile salt used to help dissolve gallstones....shouldn't mess with your blood uric acid at all.  It's more likely due to the decreased fluid intake, higher protein intake, and rapid weight loss after surgery.  Just my two cents.

Greetings,

I have suffered from gout for a number of years. Six months ago  I made a few changes with regard to my gout/arthritis

I have been gout free now for more than three months (no colchisine) and firmly believe in the following:

Black cherry juice every second day (1 oz)
Add about 4-5 drops of lemon or lime juice to each of your daily drinks (in particular drinks with higher sugar/fructose content , citric acid dramatically reduces the uric acid accumulation)
One to one and a half litres of water throughout the day
If moderate to severe joint damage has already occurred, do not hesitate to start taking Glucosamine with Chondroitin for noticeable joint/pain relief and increased range of motion and flexibility

Works for me...........

Mark..
