Not Enuff Calories
I am 25 days post op and am eating fish, tuna, refried beans, eggs, all the protein items, but I am not getting enough calories in. Can you suggest to me how I can increase my calories but still stay with the high protein foods? I try every day to meet the 1200 calories and keep all my numbers where they are supposed to be. The site I use for my logging of foods says I need more calories???? HELP!
Does your surgeon/Nut advise you to get 1200 calories a day? That seems really high less than a month post op
I know some here keep their calories higher, but I never hit 800 calories and I'm 9 months out.

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
Pre-op weight: 319 lbs, BMI 48.5
Current range: 140-144, BMI 21.3 - 22
175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012
Wow, that's really high numbers. My program called for 600-800 calories and over 70 g. of protein and under 40 grams of carbs. It took me months to even hit the 600 mark and my doctor was OK with that as long as I kept my protein to at least 65 grams. I did everything possible to keep my calories down rather than up. What does your surgeon want you to do? Mine has a very detailed program for every stage, I hope yours does too. Good luck.
Editted to correct typo...
Those suggestions on myfitnesspal.com are for "normies" who haven't had surgery. There is no way I could have eaten 1200 calories at less than a month out. I would have been eating every hour!! Yes, see what your NUT says and then make your decisions. I have had a lot of success keeping my calories low for now. You will be surprised how soon you will be able to eat more, so I'd take advantage of this period and not push calories. Of course, you will definitely need to keep your water and protein up (my program says 64+ oz of water and 70+ g of protein).
1200 is certainly on the high side of what you see in the different programs, but not unprecedented, particularly for a relative lightweight. Your 175 goal weight implies that you are on the tall side and/or fairly heavily built, (or is that just an intermediate goal?) If 175 is a good final weight for you (a good body composition) then somewhat higher calories than average is not unreasonable - those plans that use very low calories to rush to goal weight as soon as possible are rather insane from a health perspective. I averaged around 1000 -1100 calories thru the entire weight loss period and that worked fine, but I also have a fairly high lean mass (which leads to higher metabolic rate,) and a higher than average exercise intensity.
There is no real reason to try to cram more calories in than you are comfortable having above your basic protein requirements - people vary all over the place on how much they can comfortably consume - but what you do have above those requirements should count, be as nutritionally dense as possible (rathre than junk) since we tend to sacrifice a lot of nutrition during this weight loss phase, with some more than others if on the ultra low carb diets that are popular.

If you use the default settings for myfitnesspal, then you get the normal person plan. You can change the default settings to your personal plan. I have mine setup for 800 calls, 40 carbs, and 80 protein. From there you can track all your foods. I use it to keep me fairly level throughout the week. Some days I might go over carbs a little and other days I am well under.

I agree that it seems high. Check in with the NUt :)
