ketosis mouth?

Has anyone else had difficulty with flavours of some foods from the horrible ketosis taste in your mouth? I can't get rid of the nasty taste, even by brushing my tongue. I try to use water to rinse my mouth, and it makes the water taste horrible. I can only drink tarty drinks like lemonade vitamin water, without the nasty taste over powering it. Anyone else have this same problem? I think this is why our taste buds change so much after surgery. I am still in the full liquid stage, and hope I can tolerate eggs, when I hit my mushy stage. I love eggs, and would be very frustrated if I can't eat them anymore. Am I alone on this?

Yes, I have the same problem! I am constantly brushing my teeth too; It helps temporarily but that's it. Maybe somebody else will have a solution for us.

I had the same issue for about 2-3 weeks following surgery. It was horrible!
I think it is due to acid. Prior to surgery I had bad Acid Reflux and was on medications. My friend who also had VSG suggested adding prilosec as she had the same issue and it was due to acid. I spoke with dr and started taking prilosec along with my other acid meds and the issue went away...
Hope you begin to taste better soon!

My husband and I both had problems with "nasty mouth" for a few weeks after surgery.  I had even researched "hairy tongue" (ew!) because I thought that's what I had!  I finally decided that part of it was due to ketosis, and also to the fact that we were on liquid diets and didn't have the exfoliating power of normal foods.

Since your surgery was recently, I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it continues for a while after you're back on regular foods.

Thanks everyone. I certainly hope it goes away soon. When I checked my keytone strips yesterday, it was at the second highest level, which is higher than it was on my pre-op diet. Didn't notice the taste then, so it must be related to the level of ketosis. Hope it levels off once I start solid foods and start ingesting some low carbs again, not just protein. At least I know I'm not alone. Thanks again.

Hi, I hope I can explain this right. Ketosis is what the goal is in our pre-op diets. As over weight people, our livers become slimy with a greasy fat substance. This can be hazardous for the surgeons, as our livers partically block our stomach. They have to move it out of the way, and the slimy coating makes it a danger for it to slip with their instuments, and then possibly tear or nick it and cause uncontrolled bleeding. In order to prevent this, we all must go on a pre-op diet to cleanse the greasy fat off the liver since the liver is the filter for our bodies. Basically we have to have a high protein, low carb diet, either by liquid shakes or through a food low carb diet. After about 2 days of this special diet, our body begins to use our fat as fuel, instead of the carbs it was normally using for fuel, and stops the production of insulin. The result is a state, called ketosis. Basically the fat breaks down into sugar and is expelled out in our urine.
You can use keytone strips (in the diabetic section in your local pharmacy) with your urine to test the level of ketosis reached. It is a great way, to measure how well you are doing on your pre-op diet in terms of cleansing your liver. You will also acheive this through our post-op diets as well. It speeds up the weightloss process, and is most well known in the Atkins diet plan. Another way to know you have reached ketosis level, without the strips, is as follows:

Symptoms of ketosis often seen in people are:
  • One of the most characteristic of all symptoms of ketosis, is the presence of a sickly sweet smelling, fruity breath. This peculiar smell is due to the presence of acetone bodies. This bad breath may be offensive to some people, but is a classic sign of ketosis
  • Tiredness and fatigue is often seen in the initial stages of ketosis
  • Headache
  • Excessive thirst
  • Weakness and dizziness
  • Nausea and stomach aches, accompanied by abdominal pain
  • Problems with sleeping
  • An easy confirmatory test for ketosis would be to test the urine for ketone bodies. If a person feels that the breath is fruity, then he can purchase special ketosis strips that are easily available in the market and test the urine for ketone bodies. The strip will change color, when it comes in contact with ketone bodies. This is a feasible way of confirming ketosis symptoms
The only way to stop ketosis is to add carbohydrates back into your diet.

Thanks for the thought, but nope I don't have thrush. My infant nephew had it once, and I definitely don't have that.
