I need protein suggestions
VSG on 01/13/12
I was sleeved on 1/13 and my doctor's plan is to be on four more days of full liquids then move to a week of puree and then a week of mushies.
I literally cannot stomach any protein shakes. They make me gag and I can't drink them. Before my surgery, I was fine with protein drinks, carnation essentials instant breakfast, isopure, etc, but now it simply turns my stomach.
Even milk is horrible to me and I am an avid milk drinker. I ordered some Unjury chicken soup and while that tasts ok, the temperature makes it completely unpalatable for me.
I feel like I am fighting a losing battle atm.
So far today I have had 8 oz skim milk, 3 oz chobani greek yogurt and I am going to drink the second half of my Naked protein juice from yesterday. I just don't know what to do. :( I don't want my hair to fall out but I also don't want to feel like I have a golf ball in my chest all the time and like I might vomit at any minute.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I had the same problem and spoke to my Dr. He said whey/lactose intolerance is not uncommon and he gave me a few other soft foods to eat to get in my proteins. Also, have you tried to mix your powdered protein in your plain yogurt? I eat only greek yogurt as you get almost twice as much protein. But if you mix 1/2 scoop chocolate or strawberry powder in 2-3 oz of yogurt you get a whole ton of protein in one meal. Eat with a baby or ****tail spoon so you don't eat too fast and overeat. If you whip it with a wire whip it ends up tasting like mousse. But I would call your Dr or Nut and ask if you can go to strained cream soups (I added unflavored protein) and cottage cheese. Those 2 items saved my life! Good Luck..
Try adding unflavored protein powder to fage 0% greek yogurt (plain). Sweeten with stevia and maybe some sugar free strawberry jam. (AmySDmom on youtube has some great recipes)
I am on clear liquids and am having a harder time with my protein shakes too. I am sick of the sweet and I can't even have yogurt right now. What I would give for some greek yogurt!!
The other thing I am having is trader joe's instant miso soup with unflavored protein mixed in. You can mix the unflavored stuff in practically anything and you can hardly taste it.
There is also some stuff I haven't tried yet made by Proti which is bariatric hot chocolate, has 15g protein. I don't know if that would make you queasy too.
Did your Dr. give you any anti nausea drugs? Just curious I don't know if that would help or if it's the sensitivity to the food smells/tastes since surgery that may be unaffected by those.

I agree the unflavored protein mix works really well. I mix it in with SF instant pudding when I make it. I also use SF jello mix to add to plain greek yogurt. I have also mixed 1/2 scoop of unflavored protein powder to bottled water with drink mixes added and leave it in the refrigerator overnight - seems to mix the protein better.

When you mix the unflavored protein powder into soup mix, do you do so before or after adding the liquid? I tried mixing some in bullion and it formed curds like little chunks of cheese.
I find I can add the unflavored protein to cold drinks as long as the cold drinks have enough flavor -- like Crystal Light lemonade -- to reduce any odd taste.
Your suggestions are much appreciated. I'm on clear liquids post-surgery and looking forward to when I can have yogurt and other things again!
Thanks!

I used a Bullit or stick blender to puree my foods up to almost liquid. I used chicken broth, beef broth, French onion soup strained of all solids, then added the unflavored protien. After it is mixed in well then you can heat it up to a hotter temperature. I cannot tolerate tepid foods, they must be hot hot hot for me to eat. I also did the SF pudding mix with added protien as well as using Almond Breeze. I used the 70 calorie because that is still less calories than skim milk and face it at that point you are not getting very many calories anyway. Almond Breeze just came out with a "Tropical Breeze" which is an almond and coconut milk so that might be good to add some protien to. I just be sure to put all my liquids in a blender so the powdered protien is mixed in well, then refrigerate and blend again before drinking so it does not have a chalky taste or grainy texture. I did deviled eggs but again used the Bullit blender to mix them up with a bit of yogurt or cottage cheese and added some Unjury Chicken Soup mix to the deviled eggs. It was very good as a flavor enhancer. I also use stevia instead of other sugar free alternatives as I like the flavor better.
Your hair is going to fall out no matter what you do. Plain and simple. I took 5000 mgs of Biotin daily starting before the surgery, I carefully tracked my protien and I still lost 50% of my hair which started falling out at 3-4 months and continued till about 8 months. My brush looked like a hair water fall...I have long hair. It is what it is so don't stress over it, it will happen and it will grow back.
I hope some of this helps..

I had a very difficult time during the first month. My NUT told me to concentrate first on getting enough fluids and just do the best I could with the protein. She specifically told me that me hair would not fall out with just a month of lower protein intake. By week 5 I was feeling much better and my smells and tastes had returned to normal. Sufficient protein intake was no longer a problem. Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried small curd cottage cheese this morning (breakstones has these little 4 oz individual servings) and with a little pepper and dash of salt I was able to eat about 2 oz of it! Thank you so much for the encouragement, as I have always hated it before, but figured, what could it hurt to try with my new taste buds!
