How much time off??

I'm preparing for my sleeve around the end of May and my Job is cool with that, however they are asking me how much time I will need off. I'm not really sure how to answer that question. I know everyone heals different and may need more or less time than the next person.

I'm a police officer, who works 12 hour shifts,  so I will be wearing about a 15 lb gun belt around my waist. Does anyone have any idea about how much time I should tell them? Is there any Police officers in here that had vsg?

I am seeing where some people have went back to workin as early as one week....

Any input would be appreciated :) Have a good day :)

 Tiffany,
I went back to work after one week, however, I have an office job with some light lifting.  My doctor told me that at 6 weeks I can start lifting 5-10 lbs.  And I can start running at 6-8 weeks.  I'm 3 weeks out right now and am only allowed to walk.  Last night I walked for an hour.  Ask your surgeon, but I would say at least 6 weeks.

I agree with 6 weeks.  Some of my co-workers are nurses who had the sleeve done and the Doctor did not release them for 6 weeks because of the type of job they do.  I am only going to be out for 2 weeks because I have a desk job.   So, I imagine the type of work you do would be a minimum of 6 weeks.

I went back after a week and a half but I have a desk job.  I was exhausted after my 8 hr days for a couple of weeks.  Being that you are a police officer and work 12 hr shifts you will definitely need more time off.  If you can take 4-6 weeks off it might be best in your situation.

Im an ER nurse and like you am on my feet for 12 hours at a time during my shift.  To err on the side of caution definately take the 6 weeks to allow for your body to heal sufficiently to do your job, even if you are feeling better.  I was ready to go back after a month, but my surgeon didnt release me.  My first night back I was glad to have taken the extra time, I was pooped!

I am 56 and have a desk job.  My surgeon said 2-4 weeks.  I took the 4 weeks because I needed it.  Everyone is different.  Plus I had short term disability and that helped tremendously.

I have short term disability as well and was curious if I could claim on it because of and elective surgery? So, you got to claim on yours?

Yes, I also, was able to claim short term disability, I also have a co worker who claimed it after her plastics to remove excess skin. Ask your dept. at work, but I don't think they can legally discriminate based on what type of surgery.

I had VSG and my gallbladder out at the same time. I work in an office, had my surgery on a Wednesday and went back to work the following Monday. I didn't have any trouble at all, but I didn't know I could have been off longer. My co-workers were very nice and wouldn't let me lift anything. Good Luck with your surgery.
