How much time off??
Tiffany......I may have some good info for you. I work as an animal control officer and also have to wear a duty belt with a lot of "toys" on it. I also have to pick up large dogs and have to deal with aggressive animals frequently. Nothing like you guys having to fight someone...but a bit similar for your question.
I have taken six weeks off from work.....surgeon said that my risk of a hernia should be just about zero at that point....but it may take longer to get your old strength back.
Just use your best judgement.....if your department has some desk duty or something to go back for a bit....think about that maybe.
So I would say at least six weeks - maybe a few more depending on what your job allows and your personal recovery.
EDIT: I read your reply above and to be honest.....I don't believe there is any way a police officer with the unpredictable nature of your job + duty belt right around your abdomen can be off for just two weeks. Just not going to happen. I am 3 weeks out right now and I just did some LIGHT yard work (raking leaves) for about 25 mins and my abs were starting to really get sore. I know dealing with supervisors is hard but I would try as hard as possible to get at least six weeks off to recover.....with your job....it could determine your safety or the safety of others....not just an inconvenience for them. This is a MAJOR surgery. Just my two cents. Good luck!

Hey I just saw this reply :) thanks for replying, i appreciate your input. I was asking again the other day and one supervisor told me that he thinks that I can only take 3 weeks off..... hmm so im a little worried. I'm actually new tot his department and dont wanna rock the boat, so I may just have to due the 3 weeks and then hide in a hole LOL for a couple weeks. Thankfully I have some awesome co workers that will help me out with all the duties.
Thanks again!!!!
