No judgements here...

But, I do want to say that this can be a slippery slope for some.  Chewing and spitting is actually very common behavior in the world of eating disorders - sometimes practiced by both bulimics (as a way to avoid the binge/purge) and anorectics (as a way to avoid calories).  If you google "chew and spit" you'll find some info on it.

If you have struggled with an eating disorder of any kind in the past, it's best to avoid this behavior all together.

Nutshell:

Lost 140 lbs with VSG. (Hooray!!)

got pregnant  (yeaaaa!)

got cancer (boooo!)

regained 40 lbs.   (grrrr!)

In summary: Alive & Grateful.

I am 3 weeks out and I did just that. I've actually taken a bite of a few things when I am cooking and spit it out. I did it once and, since it worked to get rid of my craving, I did it a few more times with other meals. I came online to check the consequences just now.

I found that although it is not a publicized eating disorder, some in the medical community, considering it to be. I have decided that I will not continue down that road. I want to develop good eating habits for when I am a year, two years and more down the line. I have put myself through this body modification to loose weight and be healthy. I don't want to develop this other dirty habit.

5 days post op and the smells and sights of real food are driving me nuts! I just chewed and spit out a mini kit kat with no seemingly bad effects. I'm visiting my folks and the smell of the sausage and tomato sauce is intoxicating. Passing the pizza aisle while shopping for sugar free werthers at target was torture.

While i know there is no way in hell I could handle swallowing anything at present, i can't say I'm not fantasizing about the day I can again. Not that I plan on going "hog wild", but I truly am a "foodie" and enjoy the flavors and social aspect of all that food entails. Hopefully the workout regimen I'm on by the time I get to solids will counteract any negatives.

Once it's easier for me to move around, I can pick up some kind of hobby to hopefully take my mind off these temptations!
