HI everone! I had my IV in my hand because they had troubles putting it in my arm....anyway, quick question....I'm 9 days out and it still hurts where they put it.  Any ideas on how to get the pain to go away?  Should I be consulting my doctor?

Thanks!
Julie

I have horrific veins. For my recent csection, it took 6 attempts to set an IV. Anyways, the ones in my hands are always more painful because there is not the fat around that area like what is found in my arm. If it's bothering you tremendously, I would call the doc. Personally, I've had more IVs in the last 3 years than I care to even attempt to count and all of my IV sites are sore/tender for a good 2-3 weeks.

Mine is in my hand. They had to poke me twice to get it in there but had numbed the whole area prior, so it wasn't painful. I can't really answer the rest since I am still in the hospital (supposed to leave today, yay). I'm surprised they would normally put one in an arm? Every time I've had one they put it in my hand. I even showed her my huge vein on the underside of my elbow (I'm sure there's a better name for it than elbow pit LOL)and she said they don't like to put them there because then it's really hard for the patient to move without pulling it out.

Because I have such horrible veins, they put them where they can get them. For my recent csection, I had 6 iv (18 gauge) catheters hanging out of my arms, wrists and hands as the veins were blowing as they were trying to set them. They had to leave them in until they could get the hematomas from ballooning up because I have a clotting disorder and pulling them out would make it worse. They do not place them in the crook of the arm in the elbow area, they typically set them on the veins on the top of my forearm, or in my feet (near my ankle, NOW those hurt like a *****).

I am the same way and it sucks!  I've even had them try the inside of my wrist, which hurts like a ***** and I'll never let them do that again!

I HAD MY SLEEVE ON THE FEBRUARY 15TH AND HAD MY IV IN MY HAND. HOWEVER, THEY DID NUMB THE SPOT BEFORE PUTTING THE IV IN. SO IV'E HAD VERY LITTLE PAIN AT THE SIGHT. RUBBING ALCHOLOL AND A LITTLE PRESSURE SHOULD EASE IT.

Two in one hand, one in the other and both arms - all in fours days, nearly two weeks ago - the only ones still sore, and with the bruise still showing, are in my hand. Not a fan of IVs

That sucks! I've had a blood draw from my hand once, most painful thing ever. Now I refuse to let them stick anything in my hands!

I had my IV in my left hand. I have really good veins so no problem there. However 3 weeks post op and my vein is still tender from my hand to half way up my forearm. It is the IV phenergan I had postop that causes this for me every time.   Personally, as long as there r no signs of blood clots I am not worried.

I was told to put a  ice bag on my hand and take tylenol, that worked.
