Survey- Did you have hunger post op?
- Many people have post-op hunger
- Most newbie on the board seem to think they won't have hunger after surgery
It's my mission to help pre-ops understand that there is a chance that they will have hunger still, after surgery!
So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op?
- If yes, when did it start?
- Did it go away?

- Did you have hunger post-op?
Yes
- If yes, when did it start?
Approximately 3 days after surgery... Basically, once the pain from surgery started going away, I started feeling hunger. Note, I was on a PPI, and it really was normal, growly hunger. It was not head hunger.
- Did it go away?
Once I started on mushies, it became easier to manage my hunger. Eventually, I settled on a plan where I pretty much eat every 3-4 hours, and eat my protein first at every meal, and try to make my protein something solid (like chicken, not like cottage cheese).... My current plan really helps me to manage my hunger :) If I go over 4 hours without eating, I get very hungry, pissy, grumpy and jittery!
Oh, and shakes (and protein powder added to drinks) do very little to help my hunger. They might put it at bay for 30 minutes, but that's about it. I cannot have a shake or protein bar replace a meal for me. If I have a protein bar or protein coffee, it's as a pre/post workout snack.

So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op?
No, not initially. My stomach gurgled, but I don't feel like it was hunger. By the time I got several months out (5 or 6?), I started to have real hunger again. But it's greatly reduced from what it was pre-op. And it's normally when I haven't eaten in 5 hours or more.
- If yes, when did it start?
5 or 6 months post op
- Did it go away?
No, still have it, but again it's much less than what I had pre-op.

I still have hunger and it has progressed to what I would consider to be normal for a "normal" eater. There are occasional days where I feel starved and struggle to keep my calories under. On these days I have to change my routine from starting with a shake to eating dense protein instead. I continue with dense protein until the hunger is managed- many times it will take a protein shake plus a protein bar 30 minutes later. Then the rest of the day proceeds normally and I barely keep itunder 800 calories. Most days are not like that though.
