Survey- Did you have hunger post op?

From the posts I read here, it seems that:
- Many people have post-op hunger
- Most newbie on the board seem to think they won't have hunger after surgery

It's my mission to help pre-ops understand that there is a  chance that they will have hunger still, after surgery!

So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op?
- If yes, when did it start?
- Did it go away?

So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op?
Yes

- If yes, when did it start?
Approximately 3 days after surgery... Basically, once the pain from surgery started going away, I started feeling hunger.  Note, I was on a PPI, and it really was normal, growly hunger.  It was not head hunger.

- Did it go away?
Once I started on mushies, it became easier to manage my hunger.  Eventually, I settled on a plan where I pretty much eat every 3-4 hours, and eat my protein first at every meal, and try to make my protein something solid (like chicken, not like cottage cheese)....  My current plan really helps me to manage my hunger :)  If I go over 4 hours without eating, I get very hungry, pissy, grumpy and jittery!

Oh, and shakes (and protein powder added to drinks) do very little to help my hunger.  They might put it at bay for 30 minutes, but that's about it.  I cannot have a shake or protein bar replace a meal for me.  If I have a protein bar or protein coffee, it's as a pre/post workout snack.

So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op? I am one-week postoperative tomorrow and I've not felt hunger yet. I have had head hunger but not physical hunger in my tummy.

I'll take the poll!

So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op?

No, not initially.  My stomach gurgled, but I don't feel like it was hunger.  By the time I got several months out (5 or 6?), I started to have real hunger again.  But it's greatly reduced from what it was pre-op.  And it's normally when I haven't eaten in 5 hours or more.
- If yes, when did it start?
5 or 6 months post op
- Did it go away?
No, still have it, but again it's much less than what I had pre-op.

Hunger post op kicked in 3 or 4 days post op.  Not significant hunger, but noticable.  Head hunger was a problem from that point into the next 2 or 3 weeks as I adjusted.  PPI's did nothing to help with hunger, and the hunger was enough to remind me to eat.

I still have hunger and it has progressed to what I would consider to be normal for a "normal" eater. There are occasional days where I feel starved and struggle to keep my calories under.  On these days I have to change my routine from starting with a shake to eating dense protein instead.  I continue with dense protein until the hunger is managed- many times it will take a protein shake plus a protein bar 30 minutes later.  Then the rest of the day proceeds normally and I barely keep itunder 800 calories.  Most days are not like that though.

I am 5 days post op and about day three I was starting to find food appealing. Last night I had a chips and guacamole fantasy! Lol! I think mine is head hunger more than actual hunger though. So I just chew some gum or have a sip and move on.

So my question is:
- Did you have hunger post-op? Yes, definately.
- If yes, when did it start? Mine started on day 3, post op.
- Did it go away?
I'm only on day 5 post op, but no not yet.  I ate some cream of chicken soup last night and that really seemed to help with the hunger.

I bet your hunger will get a least a little more managable once you can have mushies...

I don't know, I'm on mushies now and mine just started. But I can't eat some of the things other people can either. I am very limited. Not even allowed to have chicken salad or tuna yet :(
