I was only running on treadmill, then about a month ago switched to running outdoors. I was amazed how I got sore and was still running same pace/time. My neighborhood has a few small hills, but nothing major. So I would say outdoors is a better workout for sure. I love running outside now, so does my dog! It just takes a couple weeks adjusting. Good luck to you!

I just got into running a few months ago.  I also have some friends that are avid runners.  Treadmill running is very different than road running (haha that sounds funny) for a couple reasons.

1. Treadmills have a belt that go around and this automatically makes running on them easier.  I have read that you need a 1.5 incline to make up for the belt motion to make it like road running.

2. Treadmills have more shock absorption than asphault so it is easier on your joints and almost gets you into a bounce, which helps you run easier.

3. Treadmills are awfully boring and I need really good music or an engrossing tv show/movie to keep from watching the clock and ending early.  At least outside there's nature to look at (and you literally get further from home so you HAVE to keep going to get back).

4. There's no wind or other imediments when you run inside on a treadmill like there is outside.

So, they are actually very different workouts.  But both are good if you know some of this and keep it mind.  You should still do the fun run!!  What a great thing to accomplish!

Hey There!
I am new to running as well. I started running on the treadmill in October about 2 times a week and I just started running outside about 2 weeks ago since the weather is getting nicer. What a HUGE difference!!!! Running outside definitely makes you work harder. I love running outside so much more than the treadmill as I love the scenary. My suggestion is to go at your own pace and focus on increasing your time. You said you were able to run for 10 minutes maybe stick with 10 minutes for the week and then increase it each week to 15 next week. Good luck and happy running!

I honestly dont feel much of a difference but I always run/walk on the treadmill from 1-4 on the incline so Im never level...makes a big difference.  I have a custom program that varies in incline and speed (between 3-4.0) so it really keeps you on your toes. lol
Thanks for all the help!!

I find that when i run outdoors it is harder to pace myself--at least on the treadmill, you know the speed and can adjust appropriately.  Also, the outdoors has inclines that you don't realize exist.

I prefer running outdoors as it's much more interesting.
