I have decided to go for it and have been approved for VSG. I just need to lose initial weight and then they will schedule my surgery. I have lost a few pounds but I am struggling to lose the rest that I need to lose to even schedule the surgery. Can anyone give me some ideas how to drop this darn weight??? Also wondering if anyone who has had this surgery, if they were able to get off insulin and oral meds for diabetes type 2?

Thanks for any input,
Susie

I had the hardest time...I tried to lose weight all 12 weeks I was doing the required pre-op classes for insurance approval. I got down about 10 pounds and gained it back over Christmas and when the class was over, I was down a total of 3 pounds.

Well...I had my doctor's clearance appointment and he gave me some simple suggestions. Breakfast: protein shake. Lunch: white mean protein and some option like salad, other vegetables and fruit. Dinner: pretty much the same thing as lunch. Most importantly: CUT OUT THE CARBS. And that's the part that has really worked for me. I went on a diet sticking to these rules between that appointment and the surgeons appointment a week later and lost 8 pounds and didn't even starve.

The surgeon told me that my weight loss was great and no need to lose anymore! I was SHOCKED.

Cutting carbs really worked for me. I haven't gained it back either...haven't had bread in a couple weeks. Good luck to you.

Where in CA do you live?  I live in the San Fernando Valley.  I am having surgery on April 9th.  Looks like our dates are close together.

How did you keep motivated??  I keep giving in and eating things I shouldn't!

I'm motivated by the the surgery itself. I didn't want to be denied...I still dont. And its funny...watching the scale move down so quickly convinces me that I reeeeally dont want those carbs.

What sort of time frame do you have?  And how much do they expect you to lose?

I recommend any low carb approach......its basically what you will need to be doing after surgery so its good to start.

That should get some weight off fast.

I had to lose 10#s in two weeks or my surgeon would not do my surgery. I ended up doing a clear liquid diet kinda similar to what u will be post op any how I ended up losing 12 lbs and he was very happy. Also drank lots of water and walked/worked out 13 days stright.

Thanks everyone!!! I only need to lose 8 more pounds. I have a month or so to lose it. I already started drinking protein shake for breakfast. I just need to focus on the rest of the day. I have just struggled for so many years with my weight. It seems near impossible to get it off. About a year ago, I had to take prednisone for a while which made me gain weight very rapidly. That combined with type 2 diabetes made my BS go way out of control. I had to increase my insulin a lot. Both those things is making weight loss very hard. I'll try cutting out all carbs and see if that will help. Thanks everyone!!!

I'm just finished my insurance diet and I really noticed weightloss once I began to start my day with a portein shake and a 100 calorie granola bar.  It really helped to fill me up for several hours.

Good luck!
