I have a non-alcoholic Liver disease called Primary Billiary Cirrhosis, I also have what is called CREST Disease and I take 18 pills a day.  Some are what is often called 'horse pills' .  Since the day of my operation I have taken them whole and about 4 at a time with a sip or two of water.  You should be able to swallow about 2 oz of food from the beginning so even if you have to take one at a time you should be ok.

I swallowed a pill in the hospital and take 12-15 pills a day since surgery, never crushing any.
