I saw a "modern marvel" show  I think the name of it was....  a few days ago, about

HOW JELLO (hydrolyzed collagen) IS MADE...all these years I believed the urban myth that it came from horse hooves..lmao! I did!  Here's one of my old posts..
http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/vsg/4511945/Collagen-Protein/#37353948

It showed Jello comes from COW BONES...yup ground up bone meal...ya know the primary ingredient in most dog/pet foods.
Gelatin, hydrolyzed collagen... can come from other animal products...like PIG SKIN

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AoLY8RD9I4  how jello is made

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bYIow9pc6M&feature=related   pig skin gelatin

So there ya have it...no more reference to Jello n horse hooves I promise!

friendly reminder....SOYLENT GREEN  is people  lolol

I did used to be made with horse hooves but horse meat is expensive and slaughtering of horses was outlawed in the US for a while (it's legal again now).  But you could make it out of horse hooves if you wanted.

I have Jello sitting in the fridge that I won't eat, because the thought if it made me gag. The texture throws me off, but now this. I might as well dump it in the trash. LOL!

I'll still eat it. No critter is safe with me.. whether it's in a can or fresh.. heck, I've got a baggie of trotters in the freezer to add flavor to some stew. That's some good cookin' there!

Should I be afraid to ask what trotters are?

Exactly what it sounds like!

Pigs feet, in this case- hacked off of a whole smoked piggy that a friend got for Xmas dinner. Ri*****ollagen and tasty, should add some nice body to a rich stew sometime soon. I got all 4.

Another myth is that Collagen protein passes right thru your body, is worthless and not absorbable.  If you have a few of the amino acids that were removed in its process, available in  your body, you can assimilate the protein from collagen.  (and those amino acids are not that rare for us to have in our everyday food anyway)    And...... not to mention all the folks supplementing with Glucosamine (often mixed with Chondrotin), who have had remarkable relief form arthritis pain, so collagen protein is far from worthless, IMO. (and I am one who benifited, there are 4 types of collagen, depending upon where they come from and how much they have been processed, I have supplement with types; 1 & 3)

However, I don't disagree that Collagen should not be counted to make your daily protein levels, that's too  important to us, to leave to chance... Yea horse hooves was a little harsh.... or as my attorney says thats too; perjorative.

That's one of those sneaky ingredients that makes keeping kosher challenging.  You would not BELIEVE the foods where gelatin is hiding.  (Kosher gelatin, fyi, is made from vegetarian food source - much less icky.)
