You seem to have the most positive attitude possible for such a sucky situation. My the lord be with you and strengthen you in his name!

I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

My father has an auto-immune disease called ITP (not sure what the long name is).  It causes his body to destroy his platelets.  He's been getting weekly platelet counts for years & years  He goes on prednisone anytime they get too low, but he's on some other drugs that have been doing well keeping him in the "safe zone".  He's not happy with prednisone - as others mentioned, it makes him moody & crabby, and a bit more susceptible to germs.  But it works incredibly well - his count will jump from 4,000 to 400,000 in a matter of days.

He has had several surgeries since dealing with this - last year, he had 2 knee replacements.  His hematologist spoke with the surgeon & even went to the OR with him, but everything went just fine.  His surgeon didn't bat an eye about it, he knew what precautions were needed.  We told every nurse & doctor he came in contact with about it just to make sure everyone was on top of it & they were!

Good luck!   July will be here fast!

My platelet count was fine at 268 (normal is 130-400) when I had my sleeve surgery in September, but when I went to have back surgery in December, it was below 100 & they wouldn't do the surgery until I had been on prednisone for ten days. That worked; my platelet count went Aabove 100 so they did my back surgery, but no one knows what caused it. My hematologist called it ITP also, and said many people develop it suddenly and they don't know why. It may or may not go away just as suddenly. Google ITP for more info.
