As close to surgery as you are total carbs for sure!  You dont want fiber because that takes away from the amount of protein you can eat.  if you dont count the fiber you are eating stuff that is not really giving you nutrients  When I was in full weight lost stage I stayed under 20 total carbs, at least 60 G protein and at lest 60 oz of fluid and it was still tough to get all the protein in that I needed.  if I would have added the fiber I could not have got the protein in.  Good luck

I enter total carbs, but I keep my net carbs under 40 total for the day, so in essence, I watching net carbs. I need fiber, and it's not taking away from my protein.

Your daily recommended intake of fiber is 25 for women and  38 for men.  The reason the net carb idea came about is because fiber has no effect on blood sugar or ketosis because it passes through the body undigested.  The idea that a carb is a carb isn't true because they effect the body differently.  It doesn't make any sense to cut out all fiber carbs and than take a fiber supplement.  You have to have fiber to keep you colon clean.  So if you doing 50/40 carbs as just carbs than make sure 25 or 38 are fiber.  Oh also remember to count your fiber supplements.  I wonder if people do that.

It really comes down to how seriously religious one wants to be on being low carb - if you want to be functionally low carb ("vegetarian" low carb, if you will,) then count the net carbs, because as happiegirl noted, the fiber passes right thru you without being absorbed which is why Atkins created the "net carb/total carb" accounting system. If you want to be seriously religious ("vegan" low carb, if you will,) then just count the total carb.

Since we still need the fiber to keep things moving, the quest bars are as good of a source as any out there for this stage. One can keep a fictional accounting of all of this by skipping the quest bars and all of the "total" carbs in them, and then adding some fiber supplements that don't list total carbs on the label since they are all fiber which isn't absorbed so they just list their carbs as zero and viola - one can have their fiber and keep their total carbs down thru creative accounting.

Or, you can do as many of us do/did and not worry about carb count at all, and the whole total/net thing becomes irrelevant.

This is just my standard plug to be cautious about protein bars.  They are *very* triggery for me and eating one only made me want another.  This is a very dangerous thing for me, which wasn't fixed by surgery.

I write this more for myself than for anyone else.  I could only eat a quarter of a Quest bar if you ate the other 3/4 first.  I couldn't break off a piece and leave the rest til tomorrow.  I wouldn't get a moment's rest until it was all gone.

I love quest bars....too much sadly. I had to remove them from my house, they trigger me to want more.
