Cabbage a trigger food REALLY?!
This is kinda off your topic, but...
Have you been to the amish market? There's one in Laurel and one in Upper Marlboro. I tried the sage ground turkey patty from the meat market... taste just like sausage!! Popped it on the George Foreman grill for a few minutes and ate half of it with an egg.
Some braised cabbage recipes are made with sugar, apples and even orange juice. Sounds like that is what you might have gotten hold of.
I make it sometimes with just a little sugar and several packets of Splenda. It absolutely can be a trigger food. Brown sugar, apples, bacon grease.....haha, why WOULDN'T it be a trigger food!
Edit: I just noticed that you said you called and they said they hadn't added any sugar. Unless you spoke directly to the person who cooked, they might have been wrong. Look up a few recipes for braised cabbage and you'll get a better feel for what you might have been eating.
I'm still pre-op so I can cook and eat a half of a head of cabbage with no problems because it is soooo good. It's easy for me to justify eating a lot of cabbage, but overeating any food should be what I am teaching myself not to do.
