Nutrition requirements different than what I thought!

Thanks everybody. I seriously feel like without this board I would be lost. I feel like what I'm left with is a lot more questions that I need answers to from the surgeon when I see him Friday. I absolutely have to think more about this. I have already started trying protein shakes (which I'm having some trouble with, but I posted about that separately). One of the things that was really missing from the class was the rationale, so I think that's why it requires so much further discussion. I haven't really decided 100% what I'm going to do foodwise. I definitely feel like I am a sugar and carb addict, and I am afraid of keeping those things in my diet, even minimally. Thank you all for giving me so much perspective, I will update on Friday.

I would be interested in hearing more from your experience with Synergy Bariatrics. I am a patient and waiting for VSG approval
I also attended the one hour basic introduction class. I felt Dr. Caruana was providing post-op nutritional information on how to read labels, make sound choices, modify eating behavior. More in depth instruction to follow in the rest of the classes. I came away knowing I will be able to eat "normal" foods and be more than a "pouch". He did mention sugar substitutes and his opinion of them. He did not promote sugar or carbs; he  provided examples of smart eating.
More detailed nutrition, support and behavior modification is available with Ann Marie. She's very supportive, knowledgeable, and provides a ton of information for food choices and behavior modification.
My experience with Dr. Cavaretta, Dr. Caruana, and Ann Marie Li Causi has been excellent. Waiting with fingers crossed for insurance approval. What a long haul this has been!

 Hi! I inboxed you.

I actually ended up very very pleased with my experience at Synergy!! They saved my life!! I love them!

It's weird to read my old posts because I was at SUCH a vastly different point than I am now. I was just new in the process, and frankly lost. What he was saying was confusing at the time, and now that I have more perspective it makes a lot more sense to me now. I totally agree with you that Ann Marie was able to clear up a lot of things for me and make me feel a ton better about everything and post-op life.

Message me back if you have any questions at all. I'm happy to answer anything!!
