These are the top two places we'll be moving next year (if we don't get stuck in the hell hole called Washington DC) and I'm just looking for a fitness view of each place.  So if you live in either, are they good running towns?  Any WLS support groups?

Manhattan is outside of Ft. Riley (about 20 miles or so).  Take a guess what my husband does for a living!

JillianO on the fitness board lives in Savannah I think.   I live about an hour south of Savannah but go there often.   Outside of Savannah proper most housing tends to be in discrete subdivisions.  Running in a subdivision or a series of subdivisions can be great depending on how large they are and which main road they are off of.   If you move into the city there are great areas for running, just pay attention to the neighborhoods as there are some rough areas.

Savannah really is lovely and has lots to offer.  It also isn't butt cold in the winter like Kansas is. Besides, if you move to Savannah we could do some 5ks and eventually 1/2s together!

The only support group I know of is associated with Memorial Hospital where I had my surgery.  I don't like the format of their group as much as I do the one here in Brunswick.  There may be others in Savannah, I will do some poking around for you and find out.

I'm in Manhattan! Well, right now I'm in a small town just outside of it, but we've been either in Manhattan/Fort Riley/ or in the few miles in between for the last 15 years.

Manhattan is AWESOME for running. When I was big into walking and running (several years back) we'd spend a lot of time at Anneberg park, which is beautiful. There is a Manhattan running club as well. I had several friends that were long distance runners here as well (moved with the Army) but I can ask them any questions you may have. There are lots of trails and whatnot to run on.

There are WLS support groups out of Junction City, which is about 15 miles away. I've never been to it, but I've heard it's very welcoming. My surgeon is in Topeka, so I've never been to his meetings.

I LOVE Manhattan. I moved here to go to college and never wanted to leave :)

Revised from band to sleeve on June 6th, 2012. Lost 48 pounds on my own in the 4 months prior to revision.

It's funny so far I've heard very little wrong with the area.  When I first saw it on the list I was dead set against it as I'm a coast sorta girl but my husband and all the good things I've heard just might sway me!

Hi it's me!
I have lived both places as an Army Family. I may be a bit biased because I love the Midwest, I fell in love with it when we were stationed at Fort Riley for 6 years.

Manhattan/Fort Riley-Manhattan is a big university town so it is always swarming with college kids. Lots of places to run. Plenty of restaurants to go out to eat. Only thing is, if you go out in the evening all the college kids will be out and about, you may feel "old" I know I would. There only indoor pool in Manhattan is at the university, but if you are close to post there is an indoor pool on post. I loved Kansas because I love small town living, and Manhattan is a small town. If you are tired of snow you might not want to go there, it snows until March.

Savannah- We are stationed at Fort Stewart. Hunter Army Airfield is in Savannah, Fort Stewart is an hour's drive away from Savannah, but we go there frequently. There are several running groups to join in Savannah, group cycling rides, and both Fort Stewart and Hunter have nice indoor pools. I ride my bike on Hunter on the weekend because there is a10-mile circle around the installation where people go for walks, runs, and ride bikes. Tybee Beach or Jeykll Island are also fun places to go for runs or rides. There is usually a running race around here every weekend, and 2 or so triathlons a month. Every November we have the Savannah Rock n Roll as our flagship half marathon/marathon. It never snows here so we can train year round outside which I love. Plus, I am here!

Thanks so much for chiming in.  I knew you guys were there now.  I think if we end up at 3ID we will live in Richmond Hill which would put us about 30 min. away from both places.  My husband commutes 45 min. now and it's only 8 miles away!

I decided to agree to let him put Riley as his #1, he really wants to be part of the Big Red One (I can't type that without singing the cadence in my head).

Unfortunately, he's probably going to get neither and get stuck at the Pentagon.  The job will be good for him, but it means we're stuck here in the hell hole that is DC.  (If you couldn't tell I hate it here).

I will say now that I've started driving into DC for my long runs, it's a great running city.  Better than running around this stupid Air Force Base that has NO RUNNING TRAILS.  Even the tiniest Army base I've been on has had running trails.
