It just doesn't have a hold on me anymore

My daughter wanted to go to Target today for some shopping.  As i walked through the grocery portion I noticed all of the crap food was on the end caps.  Before surgery, I would have been loading up the cart.  Immediately after surgery I would have been to scared to go down the grocery section.  Later, I would sometimes go down and pick something up and sometimes not.  Now, I might pick something up but it is a much healtheir version of junk food.  I am feeling pretty darn.  I also know I will have to be constantly vigilant so I don't slide down the slippery slope of poor habits again.

How are others doing?  Are you at a place now where the junk food doesn't constantly call to you?  If so, when did it happen?

Wow, that is fortunate!  It took me a looong time it feels like.  You should have seen me at Krogers last night.  I was dying for ice cream ( a HUGE trigger) so went to go pick up a tiny container of skinny cow ice cream.  The dang self check out was jammed so I got disgusted and left it.  Instead, drove to Sams to get Yasso frozen greek yogurt (an even better choice).   Never considered the regular stuff.  That, at least for me, is some serious progress.   I am so glad to read that right out of the gate it has been easier for you!!

Yes, I cried when I realized that problem was gone.  Don't think I didn't try.  I loved key lime pie before and tried some at costco one day.  I got sick for like an hour! Every time I taste something with real sugar it makes me sick.  So that craving is gone it just doesn't even taste good anymore. I'm glad you are finally free...I am so happy I am.  I had a craving a few things like fried fish from Long Johns but I tried it and gross.  So lol I just eat what I can get down lol...protein and more protein.  That Unjury chicken soup...yum.  I guess my taste buds changed and It's GOOD!

I had about 3 months, maybe 4 months, of not craving anything carby or crappy! It was so nice. Sadly, I knew it probably wouldn't last and it didn't. I do not crave chips, crackers, savory snack foods, popcorn at the movies, fast food, etc.... However, put me in a room with "free food" (think pot luck or buffet style serving) and I have those old feelings come up - especially with the dessert end of it. I always succumbed to what I call free food and could frankly binge eat in that type of  situation (pretty much without shame! LOL).

I went to a pot luck club lunch today. Those feeling were there and I had to work to quell them and calm down the urge to go back for the sweets. It's hard, but I expect it to be like this for some time until I get my maintenance legs strong and sturdy! I managed well today - half a turkey burger patty and some broccolli salad and a taste of macaroni salad (seriously, one fork full!). That to me was a success.

Like you, I expect to have to be always vigilant.

I WISH things were getting easier!  For me, the opposite is true.  The first few months after surgery, I didn't even have to look at that stuff.  When I hit the five month mark however, things started to change.  All of a sudden, I was AWARE of all the Cheetos, cookies, cakes, etc. that I was happily oblivious of before.  I've realized that I'm addicted to white carbs and sugary things so I've decided to just stop eating them, but boy, they certainly do call to me!

You're so LUCKY you can moderate the stuff!

I should probably clarify that I do have some of this stuff at times.  I think for me the important difference is that it no longer runs my day and I am now able to avoid the impulse purchases of crap food.  I am much, much better at looking at the days calories as a whole and basing the decision off of if the day can handle the choice or not.  I don't see complete exclusion of poor choices in my future, but I do see managed choices to sustain healthy eating overall.

Of course, last night after I wrote this post I went to the movies.  I know better than to get popcorn there, but my 13 year old asked for some.  That was 400 calories that I should have avoided.  No more popcorn for me- such a trigger food and it amazes me that there is zero restriction on it.
