Craving salt?

I'm on day 7 of my pre-op liquid diet.  I'm still hungry but it's getting better.  I'm no longer craving anything sweet, am surprisingly doing fine without my coffee drinks (which were my biggest weakness), but I have found that I'm strongly craving something salty.  It seems like everything I'm consuming now is sweet - protein drinks, Crystal Light, sf jello, even my vitamins!  I tried some low sodium chicken broth but I hated it!

For those still on the liquid only part of your diet, have you craved salty type food?  Do you just white knuckle it and ignore the cravings or are there any options to meet the need without breaking the diet?

craving salty for me means Im low on mineral sodium. A lick of celtic or natural  sea salt might help get past your craving...since your on the liquid stage. Keep up the good work...almost there!

I've done this, just a little tiny bit when I was sooooo sick of the sweet stuff.

I've also licked a Dorito or two, but we won't go there....lol

I actually had regular broth on the pre-op, which helped with those cravings.  It also helped me feel better when I was low on energy in the afternoons.  When I did a medically supervised liquid diet about 10 years ago, they required regular broth every day to help us get in the sodium our bodies needed.  My surgeon didn't specify low sodium for the pre-op, so that's why I chose the regular.

I had low-sodium broth in the hospital...man, that stuff was nasty!!  Any chance you can contact your doc or NUT and see if you can have even one daily cup of the regular?  I can see not wanting to overdo sodium and retain water, but even with my daily cup I had no trouble losing on the pre-op.

I think broth was the only thing I could think of at 1 week out to help with any salt cravings, I just couldn't think of anything else. Carmelita offers a great suggestion and worth a try.
Try your best to get thru this early liquid stage, it's so worth it after.
Best of luck to you.

I made homemade chicken broth and strained it.  I didn't worry about the salt content, just made it the normal way.  That seemed to work for me.  Good luck!

Wonton soup is also considered a clear liquid.  You can also do egg drop soup and strain it well.

What I did was get some regular broth based soups and strain them. You could get things like chicken noodle, beef and vegetable, etc, and just have the broth.

I too only had regular chicken or beef broth during my liquid phase.  It helped relieve salt craving and I matched it to what my son ate - chicken broth with chicken, beef with hamburger or meat.  It definitely helped.  And when you get to the next phase and you can have eggs, that will help.  I also had some chinese egg drop/wonton (with wontons removed) soup and it was yummy!!!!!  Unless you have a soidum or High BP problem, you shouldn't have to go low sodium on broth, with your dr.'s ok.  You don;t have that much anyway.  Good luck!!!!  P.S. - don't lick doritos - BAAADDD IDEA!!!!
