So I have to have a IVC Filter put in about two weeks before the surgery because the doctor is afraid of me developing clots in my legs. To be honest, that is having me a little more freaked out than getting sleeved! Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

My doctor did the same thing.  It will be removed in the end of July .  I considered it a safety net.  Also helped when I broke my foot two weeks after being sleeved.  Doctor wants it to stay until my cast comes off.

Heres to a healthy journey!!!

I had one put in 3 days before surgery. Don't worry, compared to the vsg it's easy! They put me out completely. They make an incision thru the neck. I felt sore from my neck for a day but that is all. I am having it removed this Friday. Good luck to you!

Just curious - why did all if you have to have the filter?  History of blood clots - family history or personal history?
Im pre op - one surgeon I consulted said I should have the filter and the other surgeon I spoke to - said it was not needed. I do not have a personal or family history of clots.

I have rods in both of my legs and one of the legs is constantly swollen. He is worried about me developing clots if I am down for too long and it traveling to my heart.

Mine makes you do it if your BMI is 50 or above. I was about two pounds away from having to get one. I think it honestly would have made me feel safer but I was self pay so it wasn't much of an option.

You sound exactly like me - close to 50 BMI and self pay.  Like I said - one surgeon i consulted said no need and the other said I could if I wanted to.  When I reminde dhim I was self pay - he said well then it is ok if you don't.  My cardiologist said I should do fine without one but now I wonder.

My sent me home with leg cuffs to wear any time I'm sitting down and heparin shots to give myself in my belly for two weeks. Those additional measures made me feel pretty confident.

I am bordering 50BMI so maybe that is another reason he is recommending it. I am also self pay but will try to see if my insurance will cover it.
