Did she really just say that?

I have a cousin who is a bigger girl but much smaller than me. I started at 380 and she WAS in the high 100s and is now in the mid to low 200s but she's very short. Anyway, as I lose (260) and she gains (maybe 220) she makes comments like "**** you're going to be skinner than me!" and when she says it she ISN'T happy. When we used to go out, all the guys used to approach her and she used to say things like "blah blah blah *I'll* get us free drinks" and it would always imply that she was cute and I wasn't. She never outwardly acted like she felt that way but we both knew that OBVIOUSLY she was cute and I wasn't because of our sizes. We knew that once I had reached a certain size I totally became the literal elephant in the room. We also both knew that in a group of friends there IS always the "fat friend" if someone is significantly larger and no one wants to be that person. With a group of larger girls it does bring a sense of security to people that they aren't that girl and it brings a sense of insecurity to the other person to always have to be the biggest person in their group (or in the room for that matter). She and I both knew which role we played and now our roles are shifting as my body changes for the better and I have my little curves and cute face and as her body and face grows into a ball shape. Her comments don't make me mad. I'm actually excited as hell to not have to play the "fat friend" role and have someone else take over! It's going to be fun!

I guess I don't see it as neccesarily an insult so much as just reality. You were the biggest one and now she is. You had to deal with playing that role and now she's going to  have to deal with playing that role. This surgery doesn't just change our bodies but it changes the dynamics of or relationships as well. Now go and enjoy being the "not fat friend"!

Sometimes the truth isn't nice and sometimes people say things without thinking them through or realizing that others are listening but flip it and take it as a compliment!
